Sonos Play1: music pauses!

Describe your network setup

Connected to Wifi or Ethernet (ISP box), same issue

Hi @ExitMusic,

Thanks for sharing your report!

Can you elaborate on the above? Which protocol are you wanting to enable that isn’t available?

If possible, can you keep the Sonos Play hardwired directly to your router while we continue to troubleshoot?

How is your Roon Server connected to your network? Can you also set up a temporary ethernet connection directly to your router, and see if your issues persist?

If they do, please share the specific track name the next time you experience a dropout. Thank you! :raised_hands:

Hello Benjamin

I recap you the issue : In my Sonos Play 1, the music plays well and suddenly pauses for few seconds and playback again.

I have this speaker for 2 years and the issue occurs since few weeks only and everytime i play music on this speaker.

Please find my answers :

  • This point is not revelant, i answered because it was mandatory. No problem with the protocol. I can see and play on Sonos Play 1
  • Yes it’s possible. FYI the speaker was connected in ethernet and issue occurs, so i change to Wifi to test and same behavior.
  • My Roon server is already connected directly to my ISP Router with Ethernet

I add that i have 4 more speakers (Devialet Phantom 1 (Roon Ready), HK Citation 200 ChromeCast, B&O Beostage Chromecast, Google Nest ChromeCast)) and no issue with theses speakers at all. Only Sonos Play 1 has this problem.

Please find the log files: logs

Regards

I also am experiencing the same issue with the 2 Sonos play 1 units that I have. Playback via later Sonos speakers and those connected to non-Sonos systems do not exhibit this behaviour.

Random pauses for up to 20 seconds. Almost as if it’s struggling to cache the stream so pauses. Seems to restart from the point it pauses.

I have exactly the same problem with Sonos Play1

I can reproduce the error at any time with the following Setup:
Single Play1 connected over Wi-Fi and Tidal Album (same thing with the same album stored local as flac 24/96) “Van Halen / Diver Down (Remastered)”, as Example Track 7 “Dancing in the Street (2015) Remastered” (Track 9 Little Guitars same thing at the same time):

The Track pauses at 2:24 for a few seconds and playback again.

For stable multi-zone playback, I changed the Sonos Zone setting “Max Bits pro Sample (PCM)” to 16 Bit. If I changed settings to default:

same thing but little bit later approximately at 2:54 and the track pauses longer than 10. Sec.
Zone with stereo-pair Play1 and sub connected over LAN (cable), same thing like single Play1 over Wi-Fi.

Another Zone with Play5 (Gen2) stereo pair and Sub, no problems at all

Happy New Year!!
King regards
Peter

Hi @ExitMusic,

Do you have a timestamp of the symptom you’re reporting? Diagnostics from your RoonServer indicate that the upstream connection to streaming services doesn’t have sufficient bandwidth to download and distribute the file to a grouped Zone. The buffer fails between Qobuz and RoonServer and the endpoints dropout entirely. This doesn’t match the precise symptom you’re describing, but it does demonstrate that we’ll need to troubleshoot underpinning network vulnerabilities if we want to pinpoint the problem.

@Peter_Muerner, thank you for sharing timestamps. The Van Halen track “Little Guitars,” when streaming to the Play1, logs two sequential errors that likely trigger the symptom you’ve reported.

Granular logging from Sonos firmware isn’t available to our team, but we can see the network traffic between RoonServer, Sonos, and UPnP as logged by Roon.

Two things happen - first, background network bandwidth allocation issues begin to accumulate. Various Roon Zones and background processes compete for bandwidth from the network connection, and RoonServer struggles to download the file for “Little Guitars” to its own cache.

The Sonos clears the portion of the track it has buffered, likely as a response to network instability. It re-requests the file after having played as significant portion - the available buffer retreats to 6% after playback is past 2:00.

We need to know the specific network topology servicing this Sonos speaker and RoonServer instance to continue, including the relative position of the Play 1 to the router and your server machine, as well as the other Sonos speakers.

Is the Play 1 connected via ethernet? Can you reproduce any issues using local files that are downsampled to 44.1KHz and 16-bit?

Hi @connor ,

Like @ExitMusic says, “issue occurs since few weeks only and everytime i play music on this speaker”

Tested again with the Track “dancing in the Street” using local file:

Sonos Play1 connected via WLAN, 1m distance to the Router (Synology RT6600ax) but if WLAN is active, Sonos Speaker connect over Sonos NET, don’t now which device are used for connection (http://192.168.1.18:1400/support/review // ??)
10:52 // music pauses 2:42
[Broker:Transport] [K…che] [HighQuality, 24/96 FLAC => 16/48]

Play1 connected via ethernet
11:27 // music pauses 2:14

downsampled to 44.1 / 16bit:

[.NET ThreadPool Worker] [K…che] [HighQuality 43.1x, 24/96 FLAC => 16/44]
11:59 // music pauses 2:09

Flac 44.1kHz/16bit, doesn’t seem to be a problem…

Hello
i test this morning and now each time i play music then it pauses randomly only on Sonos Play 1.
On my others speakers (wifi), no problem at all. So i am suprised it’s a bandwith issue. My Sonos Play 1 is wired with ethernet cable and it does not solve the problem.

Please find my log file for this morning. The unexpected pause triggered at around 10.47am on track “SlowDive - Shanty”. I stopped the music myself on the next track “Isorinne - Septembermorgon”.

Regards

Hi @ExitMusic,

Thanks again for bringing this issue to our attention. This particular bug will require a developer fix - we’ll post here as soon as the ticket moves through the pipeline into an Early Access release.

From there, the fix should appear in a subsequent production build in a regular Roon update. Thank you for your patience. We’ll keep you posted here.
