There are many multi disc sets in my library, which appear in Roon as 1 Album. It is possible to merge albums into one set, but is it possible to split them, if required.

Bottom line seems to be that there is no way to separate a boxed collection of albums into their original albums.
If you don’t follow these instructions, Roon should import the albums separately, meaning the albums are each in their own folder, with folder names and album tags that points towards these being different albums.
If that doesn’t work, you can always click Edit on the album screen (under the “three dots” menu), then click Fix Track Grouping. You should be able to split off tracks/discs from that screen by removing them from the album.

Yeah, fat-fingered my through it thanks. turned out to be not as hard as I thought. just had to overcome my fear of the “remove disc” button.
