I think you are correct, but none of us can really know.
Even Apple has been quiet on the whole ‘lossless’ schtick, because they know we can’t hear the difference between Redbook and AAC/256.
Most (real) people (not audiophools) don’t want to chew up their data plan streaming all of those digital packing peanuts for ‘high-res’ when they need to save their data plan for Netflix and P—hub.
My prediction: wait for messaging from Spotify about how lossless translates into higher costs for the subscriber and lower payments for artists. And Adele doesn’t like it, so we killed it and you’re welcome.
I agree with some of you who just want to have the massive catalogue from Spotify in CD-quality, preferably not mastered beyond the silly levels some remasters are today.
The re-sample possible today at home, with just a computer with descent performance, HQPlayer and a DAC able to read DSD their is not much of a difference compared to real encoded high-res sources. I guess that most of the older rock music I listen to, available in high-res is already upsampled and remastered with a very similar software I use. The result is the same. So, whenever Spotify feel ready to offer CD quality, hopefully not been through loudness war, multiband compressors and limiters, my playback rig will make wonders as they already do today on my NAS music files. The problem is Roon, will they open a quick fix setting to Spotify as todays Tidal and Qobuz? Next battle…
That’s not what Roon want to achieve, you can use other apps for that, what value is Roon then? Roon requires integration in the way it is with the two streaming services now. Seamless enjoyment of your local and or streamed library…
The very same I asked for. Adding Spotify, if going for CD-quality, as a complement to Tidal, Qobuz and my NAS in Roon. I would disconnect Tidal right away, due to their MQA-files. I do not, and probably will not, have a MQA DAC, not anxious at all to support any branded and licensed containers/formats, except when I do not have a choice. And using only computer unpacking of MQA, the Qobuz files sounds so much better here after HQPlayer upsample and filtering. There is very little high-res content even though both Tidal and Qobuz claimed in marketing, so for my music taste the FLAC CD mostly available is good enough. I could easily loose Tidal, the moment Spotify launch a CD FLAC offer with well mastered files.
Without integration Spotify is not going to happen as I understand things from very clear statements by the Roon team. If you choose to miss out on MQA, that’s your loss but good CD masters can sound great.

Out of interest which Tidal plan are you using for MQA?
I’ve moved to the higher tier for a test but most seems 44.1 not seeing much higher and I doubt being on the hi-fi makes any difference, whats your view?
I understand that the integration must happen. That is what I hope for. But it means that Roon and Spotify must decide to join venture. Agree. I would say that the mix/master is the main reason why an album sounds great, not the format. If a technician knows their occupation, 16/44.1 does not really limit SQ. The dynamics from the bit depth and stop band at 22.050 Hz superseeds the limits of normal perception, if they are fully utilized and techniques to shut down noise is implemented correctly.
There are albums on Spotify from Reference Recordings in US. They sound better than a lot of material in cd and high-res from aother streaming services. Occupational skills is sadly underrated.
Phil have you updated the quality settings in the Tidal Login page in Roon since you updated it?
This can be found in Settings->Services->Tidal and you will want to update it to Master
Good news Phil.
So next thing is to look at the settings in Device Setup area.
Is your device MQA compatible and have you set it up for this.
Pick something like David Bowies Scary Monsters and Super Creeps that is available in MQA 24/192 and see how it outputs its information both to the signal path and to your DAC.
Hopefully at least a pointer in the right direction.
I am on the top tier, and I suppose it depends what you listen to as to wether there is MQA content. I seem to be seeing possibly 50% MQA these days…
If you want a system test in 44 MQA try Jackson Browne playing Sergio Leone… That kinda nails it for me…
It mix and master is the most important thing, we agree. The trouble with CD is the distortion introduced by the brick wall filters causing Pre Echo… MQA solves this but a good Apodising filter also goes along way to mitigate this also…
Any info you want to share about the Topping D70s DAC is very welcome. I now use a RME ADI-2 DAC fs early model with AKM. It sounds really wonderful aspecially fed from HQPe. But I so far wonder if that was the correct decision … as always hope it is not too far off topic …
