Square acquiring majority stake in TIDAL

250,000 users in Roon, millions and millions on Amazon and Spotify, and they don’t want to lose the data mining. Tough sell

Tidal reported to have been sold by NYT

Tidal News

Now we just need to have Square acquire Roon and build a Roon “mobile” “everywhere” service and replace Tidal’s interface. I just think the limitation of Roon not being a Music Subscription Provider will hurt them long term and I don’t want that. I know a lot will disagree with me and that’s cool too.

My daughter would love a horse despite us living in the middle of a major city. It’s not going to happen, though we don’t mind driving her out of the city twice a week for riding lessons. If you really need Amazon or Spotify that badly, then best to head on over…

So you have insight to behind-the-scenes dealings at Roon then? Not sure why anyone would want to speculate based on zero knowledge.

It is well documented that Spotify wants to have the subscribers in the Spotify app because the music it just the lure to get their data. Roon, on the other hand, needs a full database dump, they are not even using the public APIs of Qobuz/Tidal

If no one on here speculated nothing would get said and no one would have anything to argue about!

Have you looked at Bandcamp?

Definitely. I don’t play music through Bandcamp but I have purchased music, physical media, and merch from there.

The difference is upselling fans at the time they’re connecting with the artist(s) / music.

Also, TIDAL/Square have opportunities in the live/virtual performance space and taking advantage of listener data for incentives.

Umm, because the CEO Danny said as much several days ago.I replied that he should really pin that response to the top of this forum. No speculation needed. But perhaps you have special insight to Roon that the CEO doesn’t?

Not sure how to pull another post into another to quote, but here’s a cut and paste from the CEO:

“Spotify will not allow commercial integrations at all, api or data driven. This is all them, not us. To do what Roon does, we need data dumps instead of apis, but in Spotify’s case, neither is an option for a commercial partner (with a few strategic exceptions like Sonos and Tesla).”

He has made no such statement for Amazon Music though.

Also, CEO of Roon is not Danny… - Enno Vandermeer - Roon Labs | LinkedIn

He is COO, I think that might count. And about Amazon:

Tidal has 9 lives. Amazing! First the Sprint investment now this.

JAY-Z is an amazing salesman, if you look at other transactions (e.g. his champaign brand).
