I currently have a WiiM Pro feeding a headphone DAC, preamp, and amplifier setup. I know that there is a range of streamers and other components that act as Roon receivers. Would I benefit from a better component or is it really the DAC, and Amps that provide the flavor to the sound?
You will find many contradictions on this. Only your opinion is the one that matter. If you think it’s lacking currently then try a different dac on the end of the Wiim. Personally I find the Wiims output a bit meh via its own dac. It improves if I feed it into a better DAC such as my RME but it’s still not as good as anything using USB into the same DAC. This is only my opinion of course. You can also find many streamers that will be better but how much of a difference it all makes is down to your hearing, on going components, psychoacoustics, etc etc. if you like it or hear an improvement and can afford to change then that’s all that matters. Whilst the dac here is the most important component that affects the sq, I would not rule out other elements completely either.
I think the DAC is one of the most important steps in a setup.
I had a Wiim pro, send it back after a day. It wasn’t my thing. Replaced it with a node nano. Suited my situating better because I already had othe bleusound stuff in the house.
It goes digital to a headphone amp from spl which also contains the DAC.
Replacing the streamer in this setup doesn’t really make much of a difference sound wise. Yes, it will differ when it comes to operating it and stuff like that, but when you’re feeding the signal digital to an other device and let something else do the digital to analog converting and also amping the signal, the streamer isn’t the most important piece of gear.
