The above is exactly the case with Mixcloud. I see, so there is no way to access the file - that was my original question, mid-thread.
Thanks again for the tip for the downloader app, @Josh_H!

Hello!
I am interested in trying the solution proposed here by using Getting Started | Stream What You Hear
However, that website does not provide a direct download, and instead directs one to mirrors on softonic. I am finding quite a few articles that say not to trust softonic. I see various posts asking how to get rid of softonic ads etc.
I could pull the source code from github and build the executable myself. It all appears to be in a .NET C# project - something I’m quite familiar with. But I’d rather not go to the trouble if I can get it from a trusted location.
Any thoughts?
The main download is linked on the main site with the big green button;
https://www.streamwhatyouhear.com/downloads/SWYH_1.5.0.exe
Softonic is just a mirror so I wouldn’t use that either.
Please try that link. For me, the chrome tab just closes immediately with no download.
Interesting. Microsoft Edge downloaded the file. Chrome refused to.
I got this working! SoundCloud streams via Chrome to SWYH to Roon to all my ROON READY devices. The first time I’ve heard SoundCloud coming out of ALL my non-Sonos devices. Hooray!!
However, the volume seems quite low. I have my computer speakers turned all the way up, and then muted my computer (but leaving the volume all the way up). Sound is definitely streaming, but maybe at half the volume of what I would expect. I think I can live with it, but I have to be careful to turn the volume back down if I switch to any other source within Roon, or my Devialet Phantom speakers will blow the roof off.
Any other adjustments I should try?
I can only think to check all the sound mixer settings on your streaming machine for the output device, been a while since I used SWYH, is it treated as it’s own sound device?
SWYH is running on my desktop computer. I’m using its Tools → HTTP Live Streaming feature. The URI provided there is used to set up a custom Live Radio station in the Roon app.
I do recall an instruction somewhere that warned about not streaming to one’s computer where SWYH is running, because it would create a loop. I don’t think I’m doing that. Roon is only streaming to wifi-enabled speakers on my network. My desktop computer is not streamed to from my Nucleus One.
Anyway, thanks for you help with this! If you’ve come up with some other method of streaming from SoundCloud to Roon I am all ears! Maybe all of this is out of date at this point.
Thanks @Josh_H working perfect , Mixcloud - SWYH - Roon .
Is there any interest or intention from Roon to integrate Mixcloud and/or Soundcloud?
Who knows!!!
Certainly interest from me, although I guess there’s questions of what would such an integration look like in Roon.
Would a search in Roon return potentially hundred of Mixcloud mixes or would it just load the streams you’d already favourited on Mixcloud? Where would they appear in the interface? Would Mixcloud’s metadata be rich and consistent enough to allow relevant mixes to surface on an artists page and elsewhere in the Roon interface? AI could certainly help there in terms of assigning tags and artist IDs but what level would be acceptable accuracy? Not asking you directly, just thinking aloud!
I think Danny did look at Soundcloud in the distant past and ruled it out due to restrictive API limits. Mixcloud was similarly discussed around that time too I think.
Although it looks like Soundcloud now have several integrations with 3rd party platforms SoundCloud Integration for subscribers
My guess, it’s not high on the list unless:
a) There’s a strong commercial angle to Roon implementing it - attracting a new or younger audience to Roon could potentially tick that box, but I expect the numbers still don’t add up.
b) Someone high up at Roon or Harman is big into listening to mixes on Soundcloud / MixCloud.
c) It’s seen as a solution to a wider objective / product feature ie. Podcasts or Radio Show in Roon - lots of Radio stations archive their past shows Soundcloud / MixCloud.
But your guess is as good as mine. It’s been a long time since anyone from Roon has posted in the forums, formally or informally, about product direction.
FYI when I looked into this SoundCloud would be possible, but Mixcloud explicitly do not allow streaming via their APIs since all their ad rev is tied to people visiting the site/using their services directly.
Thanks Jamie and Josh for your insights.
Low demand (can’t see the youngsters going big on Roon), lack of commercial appeal to either party - two good reasons for the status quo to remain and no integration.
Jamie raised points about indexing and searching for the Mix/Sound-cloud tracks on Roon. My initial thought was that Mixcloud (I actually don’t use Soundcloud) would operate more like a radio station in Roon, maybe with multiple sub-radio stations as all the content is usually >= 1 hr mixes.
I’m a premium listener on Mixcloud so advertisement revebue would not be damaged in that scenario, though I suspect most who are just listeners (not creators) would not be paid subscribers.
