Tailscale installation problem on TP Link router (ref#H5DLDK)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· Can’t reach my Server, remotes or ARC

Can’t connect to my Server, remotes or ARC

· Other ARC issues

Tell us what's going on

· I've tried installing Tailscale. No luck. Says, Always says, Not Ready. Roon is in UnPn client list but still no success. can you give me any guidance. I have a TP link Router and diagnostic data: {
"ipv4_connectivity": {"status":"NetworkError","status_code":504,"error":"error: Error: ETIMEDOUT, response code: undefined, body: undefined connected? undefined"},
"external_ip": {"actual_external_ip":"216.aaa.bbb.ccc","actual_external_ipv6":"null","router_external_ip":"null"},
"natpmp_autoconfig": {"status":"NotFound"},
"upnp_autoconfig": {"status":"NotFound"},
"multinat_autoconfig": {"status":"Success","error":"No Error","routers":1,"routers_mapped":1}
}

Tell us about your home network

· TP Link BE9300 Tri-Band Wi-Fi 7 Router

The ‘Not Ready’ indication is irrelevant with a Tailscale setup. It only pertains to the port forwarding setup and the main point of Tailscale is to elliminate the need to setup port forwarding.

If, after setting up Tailscale on your Roon Server and your mobile device(s), ARC works on the mobile device when not connected to your home WiFi (e.g. using a cellular service or a public WiFi), then Tailscale is setup correctly even though, since port forwarding is not setup, you will still get the Roon → Settings → Roon ARC status result that you have shown above.

Hi @nickbarron41,

Wade’s explanation above is spot on :+1:

When using Tailscale, the “Not Ready” status in Roon → Settings → Roon ARC is expected and can be safely ignored — it only reflects the status of port forwarding, which Tailscale intentionally bypasses.

The important test is functionality:

  • If ARC connects successfully on your mobile device when you’re off your home WiFi (for example, on cellular data or a public network), then Tailscale is working correctly, even if ARC diagnostics continue to show Not Ready.

If ARC is still not connecting while off your home network, let us know:

  • Whether Tailscale is installed and running on both the Roon Server and the mobile device
  • Whether both devices appear as connected in the Tailscale admin console

Happy to help further if you need anything else — just let us know.

Hi @nickbarron41,

What do you see in ARC Settings next to the Cloud and Server connectivity status indicators? This will be the actual test for downstream connectivity to ARC from your RoonServer through the port.

The Roon Settings → ARC dialog window is admittedly clunky and outdated - the team has work in the pipeline to overhaul that interface.

We’ll watch for your reply. Thank you!

Checking in one last time @nickbarron41 otherwise the thread will auto-close shortly. Let us know if you’re able to run through the above, thank you! :folded_hands:
