Tailscale option not showing in ROCK OS

Describe your network setup

Unifi EdgeOS router, Draytek Vigor modem, Unifi US24 switches, ROCK running on Intel NUC

To give some more detail, I have run the reinstall option to update ROCK to new version, but it still shows version 1.0, build 259 which I realise is too old to have the tailscale option. However, it has not updated to a newer version despite a couple of updates and reboots. Not sure why it is not updating?
Thank you

When did you install the NUC and, when you did, did you install in BIOS mode? In this case, Roon OS updates only to version 1.0 build 259 and doesn’t have Tailscale.

Tailscale on ROCK requires Roon OS 2.1 build 271 or higher, and you get this only if ROCK was installed in UEFI mode.

If you originally installed in BIOS, you need to reinstall.

It might support BIOS installs in the future (see the release notes) but nobody knows when

You need to reinstall from scratch, and before you do so must go to the NUC’s bootup configuration and change from Legacy Mode (i.e., BIOS) to UEFI.

Thanks! The NUC was set up probably 3 years ago, maybe slightly longer. Unfortunately I can’t remember if I did it in UEFI or BIOS. I assume if a full reinstall is needed then the database has to be recovered from a backup? It sounds fairly high risk; I’m wondering whether it’s safer just to install Tailscale on a different machine and run it elsewhere in the network. Although I guess that’s just deferring something that needs to be done because I really should be running the up to date OS…?!

You can see the current mode (Legacy vs. UEFI) in the NUC’s bootup options.

Yes

On the other hand, the NUC can break any time and this wouldn’t be different.

This is a valid option.

Currently, Tailscale is the only difference. We’ll see in the future if it ever diverges more.

Thanks, that’s all really helpful - I appreciate the advice!

Hi @ACB,
Do you have any further questions or need any more help? It looks like @Suedkiez answered most of your questions, but we’re happy to assist further if needed!

Thanks @daniel, I think @Suedkiez did a great job of answering (much appreciated!) so I’m all set

Hi @ACB,
Great I’m glad you got Tailscale working. I’ll mark this thread as solved for you.
