The best way to get audio

Hi

I have the new Pi and have set up Ropieee and it works great. I use no HAT.

I wonder if for example Digi + pro will sound even better with my 1200 d DAC?

And one more thing

I would like to get Roon server to a NUC or a cheap Mac mini - is it easy to move the server?

Regards

Use your existing RoPieee setup as Roon endpoint and run Roon on a network connected PC.

Okej

I like to also have AirPlay and Plex media server on the same PI - is that possible?

Or shall i keep unsing different devices
AirPort Express for AirPlay
MacBook for Plex server

Would be nice to not having Roon Plex on My MacBook

But maybe the best thing is to keep it simple - i don’t Know.

If you want to multi purpose your pi you will need to ditch Ropieee. However Dietpi is a good replacement and allow you to set up all the applications easily. I don’t know much about your dac but using a digione should give better sound than direct connection via usb.

Thanks.

As for now i think i Will use an older MacBook Air for server use for Plex And Roon.

But then i would like the pi as:
-Roon end point with as good sound as possible (Digi +Pro)
-AirPlay - so i Can ditch the AirPort express and get better sound

  • maybe Spotify on the pi if the sound is better then AirPlay.

A good plan?

Or think again and go the Roon rock way with a Nuc.

I just don’t understand. NO HAT VS the Raspberry Dac I2S option?

I get sound out of both but I want to use my external dac - is the not HAT the better way?

Your plan is good. I don’t understand what you are getting at with your questions re hat v no hat.

Are one option better then the other. I just want a HiRES channel via USB or optical to my Dac.

No Hat - this I understand. I have no HAT as for now. I can for sure buy one if it givs better sound.

I2S Dac - This I dont understand

So what are the difference?

Using a hat is better in theory than usb out direct from the Pi. I2S is the protocol used internally to pass the signal from the Pi to a HAT Dac. In your case you don’t want to use a HAT DAC. A Digione is not a DAC but will not output Optical, only Coax. The reason you get sound if you enable a dac is because sound is always output via usb regardless.

Thanks!

So would I bee helped if buying a HAT to get signal to my new Hegel HD12 Dac? If so witch one do u recommend? Or shall I just get a Node2 or something as a music streamer?

One more thing - In roon I get 2 network networked outputs

One being snd_rpi_rpi_dac and it looks like this supports better sound formats - but no sound i coming out

One being my Dac (an old one as my new comes next week) - this option only shows if the dac is on.

Why am I getting 2 option?

Because you have probably defined an i2s dac in ropieee when you aren’t actually using one. Change the Audio Hat setting to No hat configured.

Your usb dac will only show when it is powered on. This is normal.
