I’m off to Munich and the Show, my first time to both. Hoping to listen to systems that I wouldn’t normally be able to see, hear or afford Anyone else going? Any top tips for either the show or Munich itself?
P.S. Thanks to @Marin_Weigel for pointers from last year!
Sorry, saw that posting too late. There was plenty to see at the show and plenty to do in Munich as always.
Show was great and pretty packed especially on Saturday. Had the impression that there were a lot of interesting speakers displayed and demoed. Some sounded promising but due to high noise level in the halls and listening rooms I would not really dare to judge the sound. Glad to see that at least a part of exhibitors relied on reasonably sized systems (not necessarily reasonably prized) while the ´big guys´ were getting bigger and bigger every year. From aesthetic point of view some were really nice:
On this picture was a also an example of a neat-looking network player with big display and that seemed to be a trend along with very affordable ones. Lots of design-oriented active speakers in the exhibition halls:
It was indeed - I was pretty overwhelmed when I first walked in, and very glad I had a plan in mind. So much to see and potentially comment on but, for anyone who’s interested here’s a couple of pics of some of my favourite sounding rooms. Apologies, they’re poor grab shots!
These aside, I also really appreciated the chance to try and compare different DCA headphones. I have the Aeon 2 Closed. Contrary to numerous reviews was a bit underwhelmed by the E3 but blown away by the Stealth (unfortunately!).
Absolutely not, you caught fantastic moments and products!
Had no idea the Linkwitz dipole was demoed. Would have loved to listen to it as we have been discussing this aspect of loudspeaker design recently in the ASR thread in a pretty heated manner. How did it sound?
It wasn’t at all obvious but a few companies, including Linkwitz and Kii demoed over the road, inside the Motorshow. Which reminds me, the Kii 7 was remarkable for its size and cost, though sadly I didnt get to hear any vocals on it.
The Linkwitz sounded incredibly natural to my ears and astonishing that such an unassuming aesthetic can make such full, rich sound. That said, for the cost of the pre-built models, I’d want to be very sure it was my favourite - there’s stiff competition. It’s true that they created a wonderful sense of the space but they’re certainly not the only speakers to do so.
Thank you, that explains why I missed the demo. In MotorWorld it was not really clear which demo was where. Also missed Martion there.
Did you listen to the Kii 7, the tiny one? Not sure if they demoed Kii 3 alone as it was stacked on a subwoofer to form some kind of floorstanding speaker.
Have listened to some LInkwitz DIY clone years ago and came to the same conclusion. Dipoles with sufficient amount of diaphragm area and power can in some rooms be astonishingly good. But it is not really predictable. Btw did you check the dipoles by Spatial in some corner of one of the halls? Awesome in terms of bass and impulse response but not really sure if I would like the horn with which they combine the dipole.
