We’re excited to announce that we spun some gold from a recent regression. We’ve introduced support for Thunderbolt over USB-C and HDMI audio functionality for ROCK users on NUC 12 and NUC 13 in our latest early access Roon OS build.
These fixes and enhancements will be added to the next production update. However, ROCK customers who’d like to enjoy these upgrades now can find directions and more details here .
As always, we thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm for Roon.
Appreciated Jamie!
Can you say something about when the “supported hardware list” for ROCK installs will be updated?
My assumption is that NUC13 is supported as the Titan is based on that generation 4"x4" boards?
And i also think it would be better to announce the demise of support for Gen 5, 6 (maybe even 7 & 8) NUC kits as they suffer badly under the current RoonOS. Performance do improve significantly under Windows (and allegedly general Linux implementations) though, and they make useful Core’s as such.

NUC 12 (with HDMI) has been added to the list, but NUC 13 not!
NUC12 has been on the list for a long time already (since when the NUC12 was released?). The list hasn’t been updated for a long time now, and I think it should be with some ASUS product numbers…
Hey @Mikael_Ollars, thank you for the shout-out, the kind words, and the article update recommendation. Several KB articles, including the ROCK documentation you mentioned, are in the queue for updates. I’ll pass along your concerns about older NUC units as well and appreciate your advice on that.
Thank you Jamie,
and let me add that my concerns regarding performance for older NUCs is based on my personal library of somewhere 10K albums/150K tracks, all local, along with a couple of hundred Qobuz albums.
I have assembled Roon servers for friends based on 6th, 7th and 8th Gen NUCs and they all seem happy campers, with smaller local libraries and more extensive streaming though.
Yup, I’m a happy camper with 3,500 albums/70,000 tracks running on a 7th gen NUC i5. I certainly hope that Roon Labs do NOT drop support for this old NUC, which is still chugging along very nicely, thank you…
Yes, my initial request was selfserving, and admittedly a bit generalising.
Still, i think it would be wise to announce that (official) support will be dropped for Gen 5 and 6 under 2025-2026. That allows these units a life span of 10 years in service, really good i’d say.
And it will also dissuade new adopters from stepping in with oldish HW and having a bad experience.
