Well it definitely is not processing speed then as those speeds are very good.
When you have DSP enabled can you post a screenshot of the signal path similar to the one I posted?
The Streambox is not MQA enabled. You see from the screenshot that in fact in the settings I had enabled the function. May this by the culprit? Should I scrap MQA?
Went ahead and disenabled the MQA encoder in the audio settings. No effect - DSP still turbulent.
Disable resampling (to 384kHz).

Don’t “dial it back”. Disable it completely 
Then share the FULL signal path screen shot. Yours above only shows what is happening up until bit depth conversion.
