Too many failures, reboot Nucleus, repeat

Hi,

I’ve been having the following problem with my Nucleus for many months, ten times since mid-March, when I started keeping track, i.e., about once a week on average.

Sometimes after a period of inactivity of a few hours or more, the Nucleus ceases to function. Attempts to play albums produce the message “Too many failures, stopping playback”, and it’s impossible to connect to radio stations. The only “solution” is to reboot the Nucleus, and then turn the amp off and on so the USB input can be recognized by the Nucleus (don’t get me started).

How can I stop these annoying failures of the Nucleus?

My Roon Nucleus (Rev. B, 2021) is connected to a Netgear Nighthawk Tri-Band WiFi 7 Router and Netgear Nighthawk CM2000 modem with CAT6 ethernet cable, and to a McIntosh integrated amplifer with USB A to B cable. The Nucleus is currently running Roon version 2.51 (build 1533), and the Roon app on my Lenovo Tab P11 Plus tablet is version 2.51 (build 1534). I use TIDAL.

Thanks
-Paul

Hi @Paul_Murtaugh,

Thanks for reaching out to ask us about this issue. I think the next step here is to enable some diagnostics on your account so our technical staff can get some more insight into what’s going on here.

However, before I enable this feature, I’d like to ask for your help ensuring we gather the right information.

First, can you please reproduce the issue once more and note the time at which the error occurs. Then respond here with that time, and I’ll make sure we review the diagnostics related to that timestamp.

I can’t reproduce the issue on command; it happens spontaneously, about once a week in recent months. Based on the up time shown on the Nucleus web interface, my most recent reboot was at 0618 PDT on 8 June, so the failure occurred some time before that.

Other recent failures occurred the mornings of 17 Apr, 9 May, 26 May, and 3 Jun. All would have been discovered around 0600 PDT on those mornings, after which I rebooted the Nucleus.

Hi @Paul_Murtaugh,

A few things to test around this issue:

  1. File format - do you see errors if you play lower resolution files?
  2. Audio device / output - do you see the same errors if you play audio via the system output of one of your Roon remotes, or, do you only see it when streaming via your McIntosh amp?
  3. You mention using a USB cable - are you able to test out using a different cable?

We’ll be on standby for your reply! :+1:

Hi,

I’m still waiting for the next failure to occur. How do I identify ‘lower resolution files’ in Roon/Tidal? Do low-resolution radio stations qualify?

Thanks
-Paul

Hello @Paul_Murtaugh ,

Have you noticed any specific actions that might have triggered the error? For example, scrolling through the library while playing music, performing a search, or anything similar?
