Description of Issue

I recently replaced a Netgear ORBI AC3000 Wi-Fi Mesh System that failed with a new ORBI AX6000 System. Since installation, the message: “Too many failures. Stopping Playback” displays when trying to play any file to System Output. Among the available endpoints, another PC on the network that has Roon Bridge installed is no longer displayed. Cannot play to Wiim Pro. Roon ARC installed on iPhone states “Poor Connection” when attempting to play a track over in-home >400mbps Wi-Fi signal.

The new ORBI system is running Netgear Armor - Powered by BITDEFENDER. The old system was not running extra security. Disabling Netgear Armor does not resolve the problem.

Help please!

Are all your devices on the same subnet? Mesh systems often set their own subnet which causes communication issues between wi-fi and devices hard-wired to the main router.

Thanks for responding. I don’t know how to determine if devices are on the same subnet. The device manager in the ORBI app shows IP and MAC addresses. It says they’re all assigned to the “Home” profile.

For devices on the same subnet, the first 3 octets of the IP address will be the same, e.g. 192.168.1.xxx. If you have any on a different subnet, e.g. 192.168.0.xxx then Roon won’t be able to talk to them.

Ok thanks. I understand now. The Bridge PC and the Wiim Pro are both on the same subnet (192.168.1.xx) as the core machine. I can’t even get the core machine to play a track through System Output.

Oh. I also tried a complete uninstall of Roon, including Databases and Settings, and reinstalled. Then, after populating the library, the same problems persisted.

Just to make sure, are the following settings applied or verified on all your Windows PCs (Cores and Remotes):

  1. Network set to Private instead Public (Roon needs Private so each Windows computer can be seen across your home network)

  2. Each Window PC’s firewall settings have exceptions for roon.exe and raatserver.exe

The Network Profile on both of my Windows PCs is set to Private and, under firewall settings, the private allowance boxes are checked for raatserver.exe. On the core machine, the private allowance box for roon.exe is checked. On the bridge PC, the private allowance box for roonbridgehelper.exe is checked. Not sure if this is a problem, there are redundant listings for all of the .exe files under the allowance lists. I only have one of each checked to the left side.

Update: Robert, your guidance was very helpful. Thanks! After setting the Network Profiles of both the core machine PC and the PC with bridge installed to Private, the problem didn’t resolve right away. However, after restarting both PC’s, I can now I can play through the System Output on the core machine again. Roon ARC is working on my iPhone again. And I am able to stream to my Wiim Pro (via Roon Ready) again. So, all but one of my issues have resolved …

The core machine still does not list the Windows PC with Roon Bridge installed as an available endpoint. I tried a full uninstall / reinstall of Bridge on the other PC … but still nothing.

Kelly, can you confirm your Roon Bridge is running on that PC? I have an older laptop I use with Bridge and have to launch Bridge it each time I boot the laptop. Does the Bridge PC show as an endpoint option on your iPhone?

Alternately, 1) does the Bridge show as an endpoint option on the PC where it is installed, and 2) is the Bridge set to be a Private zone on that specifc PC under Device Settings in Roon?

Thanks again for the replies, all.

Jim, I use a Topping D10 as a USB to Coaxial converter between my Bridge PC and a Musical Fidelity M1DAC. Both devices are on and functioning. My bridge PC just shows the output as “D10.” I’m able play audio through them from the standalone Qobuz app and from Foobar2000 as normal.

Robert, I can confirm that Roon Bridge is running on the second PC. It shows as running under the hidden icons tab in the toolbar and is listed as one of the running processes in Task Manager. Also, Bridge is set to run at startup. The Bridge PC is not listed as an endpoint on the Roon Remote app on my phone.

You asked, “does the Bridge show as an endpoint option on the PC where it is installed?” I don’t have the regular Roon app installed on the Bridge PC (just the Bridge app) so I don’t think I can answer that. Regarding whether Bridge is set to be a Private zone under Device Settings in Roon … I’m not seeing the Bridge PC on the Roon app on the core machine. My Bridge PC is set to Private Network Profile in Windows network settings.

My core machine is my basement. I mainly access it via Windows Remote Desktop on my bridge PC, which is in my office. Since I changed the ORBI system, I can still access the core machine. But, now, when I try to play something to the System Output on the core machine using remote desktop access, I get the “too many failures stopping playback” message. HOWEVER, if I disconnect remote desktop, go downstairs, and use the actual core machine, then I can play to system output. I’m not sure exactly what that means. I’m guessing I need to tweak Windows Network Settings on one or both of the PC’s.

Ok. I just closed Roon on the core machine PC. I uninstalled Bridge, again, from the second PC. In its firewall app allowances, I deleted the multiple raatserver.exe and roonbridgehelper.exe items (there were 3 of each for some reason) from the list. I reinstalled Bridge. Windows prompted me to confirm firewall allowances for raatserver.exe and roonbridgehelper.exe … both set to private. I restarted Roon on the core machine. And now I see the Bridge PC as an endpoint. It’s playing in my office now.

Not sure why it worked this time. The only thing I did different was to make those deletions from the firewall allowance list. Hoping this is a permanent fix.

I guess this thread can be closed. Thanks again Graeme, Robert, and Jim.
