Tracks loading slowly on wireless WIIM endpoints with ROCK (ref#LIXL62)

What’s happening?

· I'm noticing slowness when using the Roon App or Roon ARC

Describe the issue

Tracks load slowly and occasionally very slowly. I have a ROCK attached to TP Link AX3000 WiFi 6 router (new). Streaming to 3 WIIM (1 Pro and 2 Pro Plus) endpoints wirelessly. A reboot of the ROCK sometimes helps it go faster for a while, but it slows down within an hour or two.

I have disabled IPv6. All three WIIM units are limited to 5gHz Wi-Fi only.

Local files do not seem to load faster.

Describe your network setup

Modem: Arris Surfboard S33
Router: TP-Link AX3000
Endpoints: WIIM Pro (1) and Pro Plus (2)

Hey @Lanny_Hoff,

Thanks for taking the time to write in and share your report - it’s good to see you on the community again!

As a follow up test, could you test playback to the system output of one of your devices, like your Mac mini or your iOS device, and see if the same issue occurs? It would be good to try and pinpoint of the playback issues are only occurring on your WiiM devices.

Are you able to test out a hardwired ethernet connection with one of the WiiM units?

If you still experience issues after the above, please share the specific track name the next time you run into it. Thank you! :raised_hands:

Thanks for this, Benjamin. I tried hard wiring a single Wiim unit and the delay was still there, exhibiting the exact same behavior. It takes a few songs before the delay kicks in. It seems to work OK when freshly rebooted or power cycled but deteriorates after 5-6 songs.

The Mac mini shows similar behavior. Gaps between songs can be in the 15 second range and higher on this and the Wiim, whether using wifi or ethernet. Same thing when I use my iPhone. Happens with local files as well as Qobuz files. It does not happen with every song transition and is variably long when it does.

Just now it happened with Qobuz Photograph (Def Leppard) but also happened the tune before with a local MP3 of My Hometown (Bruce Springsteen). These were shortish gaps of about 8 seconds.

Hi @Lanny_Hoff,

Thanks for the additional information! We were able to enable diagnostics for your Roon Server, and saw some sample rate conversions taking place right around the time the tracks were buffering and getting ready for playback.

Do you have any active DSP in your signal path when experiencing these issues? If you disable DSP, do the same issues occur?

Lets also see if a RAATServer refresh may help as well. You can generate a new RAATServer instance on your device by following these instructions, but please be aware that this will reset your Roon Settings → Audio Tab to factory settings and I would advise making a backup of any custom DSP settings you have:

  • Create a Backup of your current Roon database
  • Exit out of Roon
  • Navigate to your Roon’s Database Location
  • Find the folder that says “RAATServer”
  • Rename the “RAATServer” folder to “RAATServer_old”
  • Restart the Roon App to generate a new RAATServer folder

Let me know if the above helps, thank you!

I checked and there is no DSP enabled for any endpoints. I’m not sure what you were seeing there, can you tell me which endpoints were seeing sample rate conversions?

I will try the RAATServer refresh also.

Hi @Lanny_Hoff,
Did the RAATServer refresh help you?

I did the refresh last week and then promptly went on a trip. I’lll see when I get home later today. It seemed better immediately but now that it’s been running for a week or so it’ll be a good test. I’ll let you know. Thank for following up!

Problem still exists. If you can look at logs, today it hung up hard at 3:55 PM (Central US Time Zone) on the song Evicted by Wilco. It eventually played after I forwarded one track and then back. But it seems nothing is fixed.

Hi @Lanny_Hoff,

Thanks for the follow up! We can trace the dropouts to error traces in relation to poor connection:

Warn: [Broker:Transport] [zone M2 Mini] Track Stopped Due to Slow Media

We’re seeing this when attempting to play Source Format=Flac 88200/24 what happens if you attempt to play lower-resolution tracks?

The dongle I was using to connect the DAC was faulty. Please disregard issues with ZONE 2 Mini. Just now (3:30PM, Dec 11, 2024) my system took a long time to load the track “PEG” by Steely Dan, playing to two Wiim units, as above. This is an example of the delays that are making me crazy.

Hey @Lanny_Hoff,

Since it’s Qobuz content - let’s see if changing your DNS server may help in this situation.

We have seen users have a better experience in the past if they change their Router’s DNS servers from the ISP provided ones to Cloudflare DNS, Quad9 or Google DNS. Can you please give this a try and let me know if it helps?

Made the change and will see what happens. Thanks!

Hi @Lanny_Hoff,
Did the DNS change fix your slow loading problem?

Daniel, I’m not sure it mattered but I wanted to make sure I was changing the DNS where it has the most impact. Should I be changing it on the ROCK homepage, on my router or some other place? I appreciate your help for sure, this is hard to track down and intermittent.

Hi @Lanny_Hoff,
Sorry for the delayed response. I would recommend setting the DNS on the ROCK homepage as then only the ROCK device would be using the new DNS. However if you want your whole network to use the new DNS then you can set it on your router. I hope that helps!
