Roon works great for me but I have a question. I want to transfer my music files from my external HDD to a new external SSD. Once completed I will use the SSD for Roon and my HDD will be a back up for my music files. My question is will Roon have to analyze all these files again or will it remember them? I have over 30,000 tracks so a reanalyze could be quite time consuming. Thank you.
Here is the recommended way to do this from the Roon FAQs:
It does not explicitly answer the question the title poses, which is annoying, but I am guessing that it will need to re-analyze the “new” watched folder’s contents? At the very least to update the paths to the files.
You also might want to give the audio analysis more cores while it is importing the “new” storage location.
Thanks for the quick response. Looks like your conclusion is spot-on. After reading this I think I will be best to exit Roon and just copy my files from one drive to the other then go to Roon and remove all the files currently there then add all the new files on the new SSD.
Thanks for the reminder to speed up the Audio Analysis. I know this setting but without your reminder I probably would have forgot to implement it.
I think the key points are to never let Roon see the two storage locations (with the same files), finish all file edits and movement before adding the new location, and give it more cores to speed up analysis. Oh and have a good DB backup before you start.
