How can we help?

I'm having trouble adding music to my library

With the new Apple Music app, I can't find my music files on the hard drive in order to point Roon to the correct folder. I tried to export the Library.xml, which I now have, but Roon won't recognize it.

Mark,

What does your directory:

~/Music/Music

look like; where ~ means your hone directory?

And if you select ‘Music Library there for your Roon’s watched folder?

Nothing has happened so far…

Mark,

If the files you want to support - yet still use in Apple Music - are in just:

~/Music/Music

where ~ means your home directory - not(hing) nested further down, then select that folder (not Library.xml, or any other folder or file) as the one you want Roon to use.

Then go to Roon Settings > Storage and from the three vertical dots on the right of the screen select Force Rescan.

@mark.matson, I have only ripped CDs in my Apple Music directory, and I have a folder with all these files named “Music”, which does not appear in your screenshot above.

Are the music files in your Apple Music library ripped or purchased download files such as from Bandcamp, or unpurchased downloads from Apple Music? If the latter, Roon cannot use these as they are in a format Roon cannot import.

Thanks Mark. I tried that and it hasn’t worked. I’m considering just re-adding my music via Roon/Tidal anyway, since I think it would take up less HD space (I think it adds them virtually) and, since I have to be connected to the internet to use anyway, it would solve the problem without requiring me to add large amounts of storage on my server. Then I’d just re-rip albums unavailable on Roon/Tidal at FLAC (which is higher than anything in my current Apple Music library anyway).

I ripped my 600 or so albums back in 2000 when the first iPod came out. Since then, iTunes Match and Apple Music have replaced most of those mp3s with higher quality AACs. I’ve also added non-purchased albums to the library available on Apple Music.

I just downloaded Roon for music discovery and subsequently subscribed to Tidal to enable. Since Roon requires an internet connection now, I’m thinking of just adding my music via Roon Add feature and forego to local files (except for CDs I have that are not available).

What do you think?

I am not sure. I have only ripped files and no streaming services, but my library is large enough that the metadata Roon provides is worth the price of admission. I understand many users are streaming-only and very pleased with Roon.

One question I still have is where are your local and ripped files. The iTunes to Apple Music change did mess a bit with my local file location, but none of my music disappeared. If you go into Apple Music and select any single track in your library and the Get Info option, where is that file on your hard drive if you select Show in Finder?

I guess this is the answer. This file is not available on Roon, Tidal, or Apple Music, and therefore, my original MPEG file was uploaded to the Cloud, where all of my music resides, apparently.

Seems as that is part of what you are experiencing, your files don’t appear to be local.
