Description of Issue

Hello from Italy;

I already have a Roon account. I took a 3 month free trial to figure out if Roon would be what I need, but I still have some problems. Could you help me out? The point is that I would need Roon to stream from the Auralic Aries 2.1 to my Trinnov Altitude 32. I have to use the internal DAC of the Altitude, otherwise I cannot use the upsampling function anymore. Actually I am using my Macbook as the core, but the problem is that both are just 2 Roon endpoints, Aries and Altitude.

Nobody can help me out with that matter. Trinnov tells me YES, it’s possible, but at the end of the day I can’t make it work. Do I need to set up something special from the Roon side?

Sorry for bothering you, but nobody could help me out

All the best

Welcome to the Roon community, @Michael_Hardy.

If you plan to use the Aries as the streamer (digital output) and the Altitude as your DAC (digital input), connect the devices using either AES or TOS (optical) cables.

In Roon, make sure the Aries is enabled under Settings > Audio.

And try to avoid wifi connection .

Why would one want to complicate matters unnecessarily, although there might be a reason to stream through the Aries to the Trinnov that escapes me.

That said and since the Trinnov is Roon ready you could just connect it to your network and stream to it directly, no?

:grinning: You are absolutly right Marin. What should I tell you? I like it complicated :grinning:. The point is that I started ripping all my CD’s with the Aries on it’s internal SSD. I had bought it for that reason. Some month later a friend of mine offered me his Trinnov for e REAL convenient price and so I didn’t think about it, but now I have a problem. :expressionless: I wouldn’t like to sell one of these two as they are both exellent and in ripping my CD’s in bit perfect the Aries is really fenomenal, so I am trying to let them function together.

Yes, actually I use the Aries AES/EBU output going directly to Trinnov’s AES digital input, but the upsampler of the Altitude does not work with that input. :cold_sweat:

Skimming the manual, it seems you can share the Auralic‘s internal storage over the network for Roon to access it and stream it to the Trinnov - anyone may prove me wrong, but worth a try!

Great news Marin. At least it would be away to use the internal storage of the Aries if not the streamer by itself. I will try to figure out how to do that in the manual. Get back to you asap

This solution will roughly double the load on your wireless only network structure, since the server pulls the music data from one unit, processes it, then sends it as uncompressed PCM data to another unit - not even considering your urge to upsample - so prepare for stream drop outs, stoppages and error messages!
As Roon’s best practice recommends, at least your core should be connected to the router by Ethernet cable.

On another note:
Apart from all the marketing vocabulary, induced doubt, uncertainty and fear of missing out, there’s really nothing this box might audibly improve upon technically.

I need to try it out Marin, otherwise it’s just an hypothesis, just to see if 1 - it really works out and 2 -what’s the final result I still have another appointment with the guys from Trinnov, because they keep on saying that I could stream directly from the Aries to the Altitude by using Roon, doing everything in WiFi  But the more I know about it, the less I believe it’s possible. It simply seems that I cannot stream between two Roon endpoints, right? The only way seems the one you described. But also if that’s possible and the server pulls the music data from one Aries, processes it, then sends it as uncompressed PCM data to another unit, it’s a problem. It would be extra conversion because the Altitude needs to reconvert it into digital. It’s a mess :unamused: The next week I will figure out everything and let you know

No, the music data (digital from the audio file) is read by Roon (digitally over the network).
Then Roon sends it as a PCM stream to the Trinnov (again digitally via the network). There is no analogue conversation happening.

I know you want to try this, and that’s fine, but with this setup the Aries from Roon’s PoV is just a shared file system. The rest of the Aries has no function in this use case.

Hence the advice, above, to simplify …
