Describe the issue

Using TV:Remote on AppleTV4k with Roon Rock.

I can change zones, browse music and select songs, but if i select my AVR (Anthem MRX540) which is connected to my LG TV, once music starts playing, the display goes blank. Music will continue to play but I can’t see anything on my TV. Once i stop music playback, the display returns to normal.

I had it working without issue a while back, but for some unknown reason, this problem has popped up.

Hi @Roasty,

Have you taken a firmware update on either the LG TV or the Anthem receiver in addition to the latest Roon update?

This sounds like a possible HDMI-CEC issue between the LG TV and the MRX540. With LG TVs, this feature is usually called “Simplink” or something similar.

Try disabling Simplink on the LG G1 - navigate to All Settings > General > Devices > HDMI Settings > Simplink (HDMI-CEC) and toggle it off. Restart the TV and the Anthem.

Let us know if this doesn’t help - we’ll pull diagnostics in the meantime.

hello

have tried what you suggested but unfortunately it didn’t solve the issue.

When i have the simplink enabled (as I usually do), turning off the AppleTV also turns off the avr and lgtv, and I find this quite convenient.

When music plays on tv:remote, the screen goes completely blank (but the TV doesn’t turn off). when I press “back” to go back to song selection, the display returns to normal and I can see what I’m doing.

Hi @Roasty,

Can you confirm that the AVR isn’t switching to a different video signal when playing audio?

With that, can you verify HDMI settings, such as HDMI Standby Pass-Through and Video Processing Mode, in the AVR’s settings?

Do different HDMI inputs change the behavior at all?

What happens if you play music from another source outside of Roon?

It’s not clear if you gave @connor’s above test a go - did you temporarily disable it?

hi Benjamin

doesnt seem like the AVR is switching to another input as the display on the AVR still shows AppleTV.

from the AVR web interface, HDMI standby bypass is “off”
dont see any options for Video Processing Mode

Will try a different HDMI port and report back.
If i play music from Spotify, the display shows up as per normal.

Yep, i have given Connor’s suggestion a try and did disable the CEC/Simplink.

Thanks for checking @Roasty.

Have you tried a clean install of the TV:Remote extension? We’ll have additional next steps shortly, we’re reviewing additional diagnostics and logging.

hi again

have tried two other hdmi ports and same issue.
have also tried uninstall and reinstalling the app. didn’t fix it…

Hello @Roasty ,

Thanks for checking the other HDMI ports. Just to confirm, this same issue happens if you try to start playback outside the TV:Remote app, by playing to HDMI from your Roon app? Or does the issue only happen using the TV:Remote app?

I wonder if you are seeing the ROCK HDMI diagnostic output when this happen, do you have the scale ratio set to fit to screen? If you see the ROCK IP address and RoonServer status, then this is what you are seeing so that the audio can follow the video for ROCK output.

I have my Anthem AVR as an endpoint on Roon (via Chromecast streaming).
If i choose the Anthem as an endpoint on Roon and play music, music plays but nothing shows on the TV.

If i attempt to play music through the TV:Remote app, as it is now, I can see the music selection and browse albums on the TV, but the moment i press “Play”, the display goes completely blank. Previously, there would be some album art and the music playbar showing on the TV, but its gone missing now.

Hi @Roasty ,

Didn’t you mention that you had it also connected via HDMI? If you manually try to play to the HDMI zone from within Roon, does the screen look the same? If this issue only affects the TV:Remote app, have you reached out to the developer to see if they can provide some insight?

Pinging @R_102

Initial Thought, it seems there may be switching occurring elsewhere in the system. The TV:Remote app does not have the capability to blank its display or change inputs.

To confirm:

  • Is the Apple TV connected to the Anthem MRX540, and are you playing to the streaming zone in the Anthem MRX540?
  • Does the issue still occur when the Apple TV is connected directly to the TV?
  • In the Anthem MRX540, what Video Input is selected when the Streaming audio input is active, is it selecting the video inout for the Apple TV?

thank you, everyone, for trying to help me out! i really appreciate it.

@R_102

  1. yes it is connected to the MRX540 and in TV:Remote, i select the Anthem as the zone.
  2. gd question; i’ll try this and report back.
  3. the video input selected is the AppleTV hdmi input (AppleTV shows on the MRX540 display)

so I tried hooking up the AppleTV box directly to the TV, played music via TV:Remote and all is good. music plays and the display stays on.

I guess then the issue is somewhere with the avr…
the odd part I can’t figure out is why things were working fine until only recently.

Hi @Roasty ,

Thanks for confirming that the issue only happens with the AVR.

You may want to try to set this to On to see if it helps. Let us know if you’re able to get to the bottom of the issue!

thanks! will give this a go!

Hi @Roasty,

We wanted to check in on this thread since a few days have passed - did @noris’s above suggestion help?

We’ll be on standby for your results! :+1:

ah sorry I forgot to reply after I tried what @noris suggested. unfortunately that option is greyed out and I can’t change it.

I also forgot that I have a philips hue sync box between my avr and TV. I’ll try to take that out of the equation and see if it makes a difference. Will report back after I get a chance to try it.

Hi @Roasty ,

Thanks for the update, do let us know if bypassing the sync box makes any difference!
