Unable to access Roon across all devices despite software updates and restarts (ref#X0JT4D)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

Tell us what's going on

· I cannot access Roon on any of my devices. I just get the blinking icon and no connection. I have download new versions of the software but no change. I have the roon server on a QNAP nas, a computer and a Roon Nucleus. I've restarted all devices and no connection. I was having connection problems which led me to purchase the nucleus. It worked for a very short time and never added all the music before I no longer could access it.

Hello @renay_winston,

Thank you for reaching out. After reviewing your account, we can see that your music library contains approximately 500,000 tracks. The Nucleus One is optimized for libraries up to around 100,000 tracks, and with a collection this size it is running into memory limitations which is causing the connection issues you are experiencing.

Could you confirm the approximate size of your library? This will help us advise on the best path forward — for a collection of this size, you would need a more powerful machine such as the Nucleus Titan or a custom-built server with more RAM.

The size of the library is 1/2 that. It seems as though somehow the entire library was duplicated or being read twice.. I only want to place one portion of the library on the internal ssd and allow the remaining files to remain on the nas. how do i start over and get this result.

Also. Before the Nucleus, the roon core was on the nas and it worked perfectly fine until this last update and then things became glitchy. That is the reason why i purchased the Nucleus.

Hi @renay_winston,

Do you have any Backups of your Roon database from before the duplication event occurred? The simplest option is to restore a recent Backup, but the library will still be oversized. A library of even one half the current size (250,000 tracks) will still be nearly twice the recommended storage capacity for the Nucleus One (~100,000 tracks).

Since we can’t guarantee performance on this machine with a library at that size, the safest option is to fully reset the database and then add in components of your library selectively until your library reaches the recommended capacity.

To do this, you’ll need to access the Nucleus’s database location from a file explorer on another computer. Here are the steps:

 • Exit out of RoonServer
 • Navigate to your RoonServer’s Database Location
 • Find the folder that says “RoonServer” and delete it

Now, open the Nucleus Web Admin page and restart Roon Server. This should automatically generate a new database without the library attached. You can then add in your storage locations in Settings → Storage, but first ensure that not all 250,000 tracks are in the location you select. Trim the library down to the recommended capacity of 100,000 first.

Let us know if you’re able to complete this step and we’ll proceed from there.

Ready for the next steps

Whats next?

Hello @renay_winston,

Excellent work getting the database reset! Now that you have a fresh, clean slate, we can focus on getting just that specific portion of your library onto the Nucleus One’s internal storage, leaving the rest safely on your NAS.

Here are the next steps to format and access the internal storage so you can copy your trimmed library over:

1. Format the Internal Drive

Before you can copy files to the Nucleus's internal SSD, it must be formatted by the Roon OS.
 • Open the Nucleus Web Administration interface (where you restarted the server earlier).
 • Look for the Internal Music Storage section.
 • Click the Format button. (Note: This will erase anything currently on that specific internal SSD).

2. Copy Your Selected Files

Once formatted, the drive will be exposed on your local network. You can drag and drop the specific music folders you want right from your computer.
 • Connect to the Nucleus internal storage from your computer over the network.
 • Copy the carefully selected portion of your library over to the Storage > InternalStorage folder.
For detailed instructions on exactly how to map the network drive and connect to it from either a Mac or Windows PC, please follow our step-by-step guide here: Nucleus Internal Storage Guide

3. A Quick Reminder on Library Size

If you later decide to add your QNAP NAS as a watched folder in Settings > Storage, please keep your total track count in mind. Roon will index everything on the internal SSD plus everything in the NAS watched folder. If that combined total creeps back up toward 250,000 tracks, the Nucleus One will run out of memory and drop the connection again. To keep the system fast and stable, keep the total exposed track count right around that 100,000 mark.

Take your time copying the files over, and let us know if you run into any trouble accessing the drive!
