After a few months of successful Roon use, I now cannot access the service via my MacBook pro (my roon server). Every time I try and use it, a screen pops up with an Airplay code with 4 digits underneath. And that's it. It just stays like that. It's not clear how or where I would enter that code. And why is this suddenly happening now? So roon is unplayable.
Your screenshot looks like you are trying to send an Airplay stream to your Mac, which shouldn’t have anything to do with Roon opening. Have you tried to perform a full reboot of the Mac yet? If not, I would give this a try, please let us know if it helps.
Thanks for your reply. This has been a consistent problem for a while so I’ve frequently rebooted my computer since this first occurred. Here’s what happens - I click on my roon icon on my desktop, Roon opens normally but as soon as I click on a track to play, this airplay code comes up. If I close it and try again, the same screen appears with a different airplay code. As I mentioned, there’s no obvious way or means to enter this code anywhere - and besides, why would I need to to enter a code every time I want to use Roon? I was assuming this would be a common problem with an easy fix but obviously not. Thanks & best, James
Not as far as I now. This seemed to happen randomly. The endpoint (if I understand the question correctly) is Fiio M11 DAP. However, I can’t actually check what the output zone is because I now have this issue. This has been going on now for 5 hours…
This may well be the case, but it seems to me that you probably are using AirPlay to stream to the M11. Maybe that’s the only option you have with the M11. (The M11 Plus supports Roon Ready streaming).
The code request might be related to Roon enabling AirPlay 2 support a while ago.
It’s best if I hand this back to official support, and for your new backup problem as well. They will be back in this thread to work with you
Thanks. It’s a bit baffling because I had no issues at all until the random airplay intervention. In other words, I’ve succesfully used the DAP as an endpoint until this issue. And now I have this ongoing issue with ‘Snapshotting Data bases’ which has been going on all day. I;m a very frustrated roon user after a very positive initial response. Roon is a convenient luxury and I’m now exasperated with it. It shouldn’t be costing time and effort for it to function and I am now just using Tidal so Roon is becoming redundant and I am not going to renew my subscription.
Thanks for taking the time to follow up and share additional details.
It doesn’t look like your database is all that large, so it certainly shouldn’t be taking that long. Before any next steps, do you have a recently saved Roon backup available?
If so, we can proceed with additional troubleshooting, I’d hate for you to lose your library edits and saved settings in the case of not having any backups available.
First, I’d close Roon and restart the Mac again - the backup attempting to be made will likely fail, but if you have one recently saved you should be fine.
From there, let us know if you’re able to access your Roon Settings>Audio and see if the M11 shows up under ‘Roon Ready’ and if so, select this as zone for playback.
Hi - thanks for your reply. The database issue is now resolved and I can now access the roon start page on my Macbook pro. But I still have this weird airplay issue on the Macbook pro. Every time I click on a track to play, I get a screen that asks for an airplay code. I occasionally use my mac book pro speakers to play music but this is no longer possible due to this airplay code issue. See screen grab.
My main use of Roon is through a Naim Muso or NaimAtom. I use my Fiio M11 DAP as a handheld device to selects tracks, etc.
However, that has now stopped working as well. According to my Fiio, roon is playing the Muso but I hear nothing. Roon via the Fiio doesn’t activate or wake up the Muso either (it used to). See screen grab with Muso icon playing but Muso itself is not on. It makes no difference if I turn the Muso on. I still hear nothing.
My initial experience with Roon was very positive. But now it doesn’t work at all in the way that I want to use it (and used to use it). Roon is a luxury service if you subscribe to tidal and have the Focal Naim app so obviously, it needs to work and be more convenient.
thanks & best,
Thanks again. It’s muso vs 1. But i also can’t use the fiio to operate the Naim Atom any more either which is roon ready. My main complaint here is that these are new, baffling problems. I successfully used the Muso and Atom via the Fiio Dap until recently. And then one day, it didn’t work and has never worked since. This weird airplay code issue on my MacBook is probably unrelated. But together they make Roon unusable for me.
These may well be two different problems and anyway would be good not to mix up different things. Nobody here knows your system and the devices you have or what you are doing, unless you tell us
When was the last time the Mu-so worked? Did you recently update Roon, maybe for the first time in months, and did it stop working after that?
I am asking because at the end of June an update was released that enabled AirPlay 2 in Roon. Most older devices remained compatible, but the Mu-so 1 (which only supports AirPlay 1) has not worked automatically ever since this update. Roon is working on restoring this.
This was the update in question:
You need to do two things to make the Mu-so v1 work again apart from the question of the AirPlay code:
Go to the Device Settings for the Mu-so in Roon, go to Advanced Settings and enable Compatibility Mode
On an iPhone or iPad, open the Apple Home app and add the Mu-so
Hopefully this helps with the code as well. If not, maybe you can / have to turn off the AirPlay code check for the Mu-so in Apple Home.
These two steps helped in many other cases after the mentioned Roon update, like this one:
I suggest to try this first and then see about the other stuff
Hi again - Appreciate your ongoing suggestions. It looks like I did get this recent update. However, I can no longer see the Muso as an option under Audio settings on my MacBook pro , just my MacBook pro speakers and ‘system output’. So it’s disappeared. And now the Fiio DAP no longer connects to Roon. I have the “waiting for your roon server…” message on repeat. So this is a new issue. Again, thanks for your help but I am increasingly finding this a time consuming hassle and I am close to giving up on Roon altogether. J
I am out of options for next steps due to the complexities, but I think we have at least clarified some things and ruled out some others.
I think it’s most efficient if official support continues from here, but I hope what you and I did over the weekend hopefully makes it easier for them. @benjamin?
