Unable to access RoonOS webUI but Roon is "working"

I was updating my library and using the WebUI to Stop Roon Server from running and now I am unable to connect to the WebUI from the browser I have always used. I cleared my cache and cookies and that did not change anything. I also tried a different browser on my computer and also tried two browsers on my phone.

I am able to access and use Roon through all my Roon Remote Devices and Roon Arc is able to log in and connect to everything normally.

In Roon Remote under Settings - General - it shows the right address for the Nucleus. But if I go to Settings - Setup - and click Find Roon OS it does not find anything and just says it is continuing to search.

What am I missing here? Thanks

Are you sure you ‘stopped Roon Server’. That is different to ‘shutting down the NUC’.

To stop the Roon Server but leave the Nucleus powered on and working so that you can access the network share, you need to click on the little downward pointing triangle to the immediate right of the ‘Roon Server Software’ Restart button and then select ‘Stop’ from the menu that appears.

When you have finished your copy, you can restart the roon server by clicking on the ‘Roon Server Software’ Restart button.

In the meantime, if you shutdown the Nucleus, you will have to power it on using the Power Button.

Thanks for the suggesting. I got the same message when I did http://nucleus.local.

I have not changed any firewall or proxy settings and I hesitate to change too much since the music is playing through the system and everything else looks like it is connected.

Yes, you are describing what I did to stop Roon Server. I have done that before and then after making changes to the music files I came back to the same place and restarted it which was what I was planning to do.

I think I will probably try to turn it off and restart using the power button and cross my fingers that everything comes back online.

Thanks

You sure your ip address for the server has not changed? If you can still use Roon what does it show as the ip address in about?

It has not changed. Under General it shows the same IP, under Roon ARC it shows it is connected to the same IP. But under Setup - Find it does not ever identify it and I can’t connect through a browser.

Very odd reboot everything then including network gear. If your a Mac user wonder if it another sequoia issue. Or something is blocking its web service.

Rebooted everything and was able to see it with webUI but it did not connect to Roon Server so had to delete old server file and then rebuild and restore from a backup…

Hi @Dave_Murphy,

Thank you for the report. The diagnostics we pulled from your previous database (before the Backup/Restore) showed evidence of database corruption. More precisely, components of your Roon database were copied incorrectly and no longer matched what was expected, causing deep-level database errors.

These shouldn’t have caused network interface problems with RoonOS itself, but both issues possibly share an underlying hardware cause.

Diagnostics from the new database so far don’t show evidence of the same corruption - however, latent corruption can take some time to manifest.

In the short-term, I recommend making sure that you have retained a copy of an old Backup from before any symptoms emerged, just in case.

Long-term, this corruption is possibly a sign of SSD failure in the Nucleus, and you may soon experience more severe symptoms that are more destructive to your collection.

If you experience any discrepancies with RoonOS or this Nucleus in the next few days, please reach out to our RMA team directly by filling out the Nucleus Troubleshooting Typeform.

We’d be happy to answer any questions or elaborate further.

Would this happen from deleting or changing files from the InternalStorage Folder that the music is in without turning off the RoonServer using the webUI? I had started trying to use PerfectTunes and realized I had not turned off the server which is when things started going haywire again.

I do not have any older backups than a few weeks ago. So I am not sure that I will be able to do that. After the last crash I just restarted the Roon Server and let it rebuild the database and did not restore a backup. I thought I would just see how it ran using the newly rebuilt database.

It seemed to run OK for a while but then it would seem to just stop playing music after 5-10 songs. If I rebooted the system it would come back online. Can you look at the current log to see if you can identify what files are causing the problems? It stopped playing just now at 11:58PM when I was not playing music from my library but just listening to a few songs on Tidal.

I have a spare laptop that I am thinking about loading the Roon Server software onto to see if that is more stable than the Nucleus if it you suspect it may be a hardware issue. Can you please point me to the best post that would describe what process I should use to transfer from using the Nucleus to a PC. I already have a folder on that PC with all of the music files on it so I just need to get the Roon Software set up on it.

Thanks.

Hey @Dave_Murphy,

It’s difficult to speak in absolutes here, as the diagnostic report unfortunately didn’t protect specific details around the core of the issue.

It doesn’t seem to be related to any database corruption - so thats good news! Has Roon finished analyzing and importing your local library?

How is your Nucleus connected to your network? Can you set up a direct ethernet connection and let me know if you still experience playback issues?

Thank you! :+1:

Hi @benjamin, The Nucleus is and has always been connected to the network with a hardwired connection.

Roon has not crashed since yesterday. I restarted the Roon server files but did not restore from a backup. I am glad it is working but I am going to need to use the software to identify albums because about 600 albums are showing as not identified. Over the past few weeks I had used Roon to identify all of the albums that I could (about 470). Most of them were straightforward but some required a lot of track adjustments and some also had duplicates of some tracks on the same album. I deleted some of the duplicate tracks using the Roon…Edit Album interface. I am wondering if that caused database issues.

Can you please suggest best practice for organizing and identifying the albums properly. Many of the unidentified albums are compilations where the folder structure was separated by Artist. For example a Christmas Favorites album would have a Folder under Nat King Cole for Christmas Favorites and in that folder would be The Christmas Song. It would also have a Folder under Dean Martin and in that folder would be Baby It’s Cold Outside. When Roon Server organized the database within Roon it looks as if I have 16 Christmas Favorite albums becuase each artist has their own file.

The way I approached this over the past few weeks was that I first went through and combined the albums using the Roon album edit menus and then after I got everything combined I identified the albums using Roon as well. In that process I did discover some duplicated songs which I deleted using the Roon editing as well. Should I be approaching this process differently?

Also, could you point me to the best instructions for switching from a Nucleus to a PC for our Core in the event that I am having hardware issues. Thanks

Hi @Dave_Murphy,

Please see below for the requested information:

Roon will automatically attempt to identify these tracks using audio waveform analysis, metadata, and any tags you’ve applied. If it’s not able to identify them automatically, you can take the manual approach of merging or identifying albums under each Edit Album dialog window for affected tracks.

The underlying file taxonomy shouldn’t matter unless the files have contradicting or entirely no metadata attached.

Please provide a copy of the Christmas compilation/various artists album you’ve referred to by uploading it here.

Please also share a screenshot of your Watched Folders page.

Here’s the best guide:

Please let us know if you have any additional questions. Thanks!

I uploaded the information for the tracks for my example album but was not sure if you were just looking for the path information or what you wanted specifically uploaded. If you were looking for something else please let me know.

Thanks for the link to the new server steps.

Also the system crashed again last night (early this morning) while I was editing the albums. It just suddenly said it could not connect and told me to restore from a backup. I restored it from the most recent back up. Can you look at the log and see what caused the crash again. I was in the process of using the Roon system to identify albums and was combining albums together that were compilations where different artists’ tracks were showing up as different albums as in my Christmas Album example above. The crash happened at about 1:30AM Central Time on December 17.
