Unable to Backup Roon to Dropbox Due to Space Limitations (ref#ISJ31M)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· None of the above quite fits

None of the above quite fits

· None of these quite match

Tell us what's going on

· I backed up to a free Dropbox account which is now full. Dropbox is very expensive and I don’t wish to subscribe. I’ve read your articles about backing up but haven’t got a clue what you are talking about! I’ve a Nucleus One (brilliant) and an Apple laptop with loads of storage space. Can I use this (it’s on the same network as everything else)?

Tell us about your home network

· Router is a Linksys WiFi 6, (SPNMX 56), proton vpn, Uptone audio etherregen switch (only to DAC)

Hi @Phillip_pipd.sanders,

A locally-stored Backup location is worthwhile even if you also had Dropbox or continue to use it.

This will require a few steps. Since Roon backs up to a network share, the key is enabling SMB file sharing on the Mac first. Here’s the full walkthrough:

On your Mac:

  1. Go to System Settings → General → Sharing and toggle on File Sharing, then click the ⓘ (info) button next to it.

  2. Under Shared Folders, click + and add a dedicated folder for backups. We recomend something like RoonBackups in a dedicated location that you are not using to host music. Make sure your user account is set to Read & Write.

  3. Click Options… and confirm “Share files and folders using SMB” is enabled. Then check the box next to your user account and enter your Mac password when prompted. This step is easy to miss, but it’s required — without it, the Nucleus One won’t be able to authenticate.

  4. Take note of your Mac’s hostname (shown in the File Sharing pane, e.g. Connors-MacBook.local) or its IP address (System Settings → Wi-Fi → Details). The .local hostname is sometimes a better choice for laptops, since your Mac’s IP can change over time.

In Roon:

  1. Go to Settings → Backups → Scheduled Backups → Add, then Browse → Add Network Share.

  2. Enter the path as:

smb://Connors-MacBook.local/RoonBackups , replacing the hostname with whatever you recorded in step 4 above.

  1. For credentials, use your Mac’s short account name (the name of your home folder, not your full display name) and your Mac login password. Leave the workgroup field blank.

  2. Set your preferred schedule and how many backups to keep, and you’re done.

A few things to know since this is a laptop:

  • Scheduled backups will fail silently if your MacBook is asleep, closed, or off your network when the Backup runs.
  • If you run into an "UnexpectedError" message when adding the share, it's almost always one of three things: the SMB checkbox in step 3 wasn't checked, the username isn't the short account name, or the shared folder doesn't have write permission. Double-check those and it should connect.
We’re happy to answer any questions.

Hi @Phillip_pipd.sanders,

We’re circling back since we haven’t seen a response to this thread and it will shortly close due to inactivity.

Have you been able to configure a local network Backup location? Diagnostics don’t show any network shares attached to the Nucleus, so we wanted to verify.
