Hi @wanowak,
Thanks for writing in to let us know about this issue. We will need some more information to be able to assist you. Please describe the make and model of your network devices and how they are connected. Meanwhile, ensure that the remotes you want to use and your server are on the same subnet.

I have requested help connecting my Samsung tablet in the blog. I sent deatails but no reply.

Hi @wanowak,
Sorry about the long response time.
Since you are using a Windows PC, I would verify that both Roon.exe and RAATServer.exe have been added as exceptions to your Windows firewall.

You can use these instructions to add the exceptions and the executables themselves would be located in your Database Location/Application folder path.

I would also add these exceptions to any Antivirus or other Firewall blocking applications you may have and ensure that you connected to your network via a Private network, not a Public one, see this guide for more information.

Is this impacting just one of your Roon remotes or all of them?

I have tried all the instructions and guide notes. Reinstalled the remote app several times. Used the IP address to scan. All to no avail. The iphone and laptop roon remote work well. It’s only the tablet and android phone which cannot find the server.

I missed this that you posted earlier in the thread. This article explains subnetting. Basically, you compare the IP address of your server with the IP address of your tablet and phone. The second to last octet needs to be the same.

I checked the article but it’s way beyond anything I can understand. Having said that I have checked the IP addresses of my computer and of my notebook and both have the same second to last octet. Only the last octet is different. Its strange as I have been using the notebook (purchased specifically to use as a Roon remote) since I subscribed to Roon. It is only in the past couple of months that it cannot locate the Roon server. Now only my iPhone works as a remote.

Okay, so the subnet is the same.

Can you think of any changes to your network between when it worked and when it stopped working?

No changes to the network that I’m aware of.

Hi @wanowak,

We’ve taken a look at your basic account info and can see multiple local IP addresses reporting from your RoonServer laptop. Usually, this indicates a VPN. Can you confirm whether this is the case?

If you’re using something like Tailscale or Wireguard on your RoonServer machine, I’d recommend making sure it’s either disabled or installing the same VPN on the affected Roon Remote as well.

I use NordVPN but not on the pc that hosts the Roon server or the android device that cannot connect. Additionally the problem occurred prior to installing the VPN. At the moment I only can use my iPhone and no android device. While I appreciate the help the solutions offered are actually new technology to me and beyond what I expect from a premium product in operating smoothly. My android notepad is about 5 years old. Is that a factor?. Do I need to buy new devices to keep up with Roon?

Hi @wanowak,

Thank you for your patience in awaiting a response. We’ve activated diagnostics - here’s what we’ve learned:

First, your tablet and laptop are on a separate WiFi network from your RoonServer machine, preventing stable connection. If you have a second network interface (like your VPN) that you use intermittently, then be sure to add all your Roon-connected devices to the same VPN mesh network.

Additionally, upstream service requests are failing as a result of restrictions in your geographic region. Certain servers are unavailable that are essential to RoonServer’s functioning. This is beyond our control - I suggest you post in Tinkering to see what other users have tried as workarounds.

This reply is beyond my technical abilities to implement. Additionally the geographic location doesn’t account for my iPhone and windows laptop working perfectly well.
Is this an android or Samsung issue? I was considering buying a titan server. Would that help?

Hi @wanowak,

A state-level firewall is restricting your internet access to Roon’s essential services. This is outside Roon’s control. If you’ve been using a VPN service to access Roon, then please post in Tinkering for consultation with other users in your situation.
