Describe the issue

After re-connecting with Roon after a couple of years where the previous core & remote versions worked well on the old devices, I have updated all and My roon remote ipados app (all latest software versions) cannot find roon win11 pc server on local wifi network.

The server is on a windows pc (all latest software versions) and the server pc appears to be running and roon works ok (found & plays music etc including successfully enabling network connected apple airpods) on the windows pc.

All the roon related allowed exe files mentioned in support notes are in the windows firewall exceptions list for a private network and not for a public network.

Ipad roon remote app still not finding server even when windows defender firewall is disabled.

Tried fresh install on both remote and server devices.

Router is a modern telstra rebranded 5g arcadyan meteor 2nd gen which seems to be upnp enabled and to which the windows pc with asus ryzen cpu is connected.

Intermittently, the roon remote app when looking for the server will briefly recognise something and says “connecting” for a few seconds then goes back to “looking”.

The ipv4 ip on the remote iPad device is shown as 192.168.0.182 whereas the wifi settings on the pc identify the router ipv4 ip as 192.168.0.185 ? I think they are supposed to be the same but I am unsure what to do. The general ip for the router is 192.168.0.1 and both the remote and server devices are both connected on the same SSID.

Describe your network setup

as previous info…

To clarify your comment, the router has it’s main ip address as 192.168.0.1 (which is expected) and the DHCP of your router will assign a unique ip address as shown in your post. So if my understanding is correct then there isn’t a problem with your ip addresses.

Is your router connected to your server by ethernet (recommended) or WiFi (not recommended)?

yes it is wifi connected, but I can try ethernet as suggested. Limited number of all used ports on router but can reconfigure if this turns out to be the cause of the issue. Thanks for pointing out the connectivity recommendation. Will rpost eply tomorrow when I have checked that. Tx

Not sure I understand this? Maybe, if the ethernet option doesn’t work, you could clarify.

Pretty sure they are just saying that all the ports are being used on the router (probably a 4 port switch in the router?) but they will reconfigure to hook the PC(server) up to the router and see if that works…?

Yes, I was “over thinking,” I should wake up before commenting

Updated information - now changed to ethernet from wifi with no change. Also switched router from both IPv6 & IPv4 protocols to IPv4 only, both as suggested. However, both changes made no difference with ipad Remote app still searching but not connecting to Server running on win pc (with firewall temporarily off for private network & relevant roon exe’s in firewall exception list for private network only). PS win11 was updated to latest version prior to trying updated Roon.

Updated - now working all ok after rebooted iPad. yay !!

However, the windows defender firewall exceptions for the Roon exe files seems to not had an effect, as Roon remote now works when private network firewall is off (still on ethernet) but stops working when firewall (with roon allowed exceptions in list for private but not public ticked and saved) is on. Turn off firewall on server pc, and starts working again. Will private firewall leave off until get to the bottom of it. Suggestions most welcome.

Just to be sure, you are putting RAATServer.exe and Roon.exe from the location that you run roon from into the firewall, correct? They have also added roonbridge.exe to the needed exceptions (I don’t see that on my system, it may just be an “in-case you need it” thing?).
see this FAQ:

In my case it looks like this (in Norton firewall):

Agreed, but the files can be manually added if needed in defender and others, however…

For your home Wi-Fi network, you actually want the Windows Firewall set to Public not Home.

This might seem counter-intuitive, but the terms “Public” and “Home” in Windows Firewall refer to the level of trust you place in the network, not whether it’s public like a coffee shop or private like your home.

Here’s the breakdown:

  • Public network: This setting offers the most security, blocking file sharing and making your device invisible to others on the network. This is ideal for any network you don’t fully trust, including your home Wi-Fi.
  • Private network: This setting allows for more discovery and sharing between devices on the network. It’s intended for trusted, closed networks, but using it on your home Wi-Fi exposes your device to more potential vulnerabilities.

So, for the best balance of security and functionality on your home Wi-Fi, set the Windows Firewall to Public.

@AndrewC I’ve heard a rumour that in the last Windows release the firewall rules were reset and any exceptions, eg. Roon, will need to be added manually… it’s worth a look…

Thanks for the suggestions…. all is working ok now including roon arc on mobile as well as remote on lan. Will keep an ongoing eye on the windows firewall issues.
