Unable to connect to new Roon Server on iMac after migration (ref#5415N7)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· None of the above quite fits

None of the above quite fits

· None of these quite match

Tell us what's going on

· I am installing Roon Server in an iMac, migrating from my PC Roon Server. In the last step of migration and bringing db, in the window "Connect to your Roon Server" I see the new server on the Mac listed. The old Roon PC Server was also there, but I have quit that server. I cannot connect to this new server on the Mac, nothing happens when I click "Connect"

· Just a regular router

Hey @Nathan_Kelerstein,

Thanks for writing in and for sharing your report! I’m sorry to hear you’re having issues connecting to your new server running on your Mac.

A few initial things to check:

  1. Your macOS firewall - if you temporarily disable this and reboot Roon, are you able to connect?
  2. A full reboot of the Mac - let me know if this may help get you connected.
  3. Get a direct ethernet connection from your Mac to your primary router, and see if you run into the same issues.
We’ll be monitoring for your reply! 🙏

Hi @Benjamin,

Thanks for your help! Restarting the iMac allowed me Unauthorize the old server and to connect to the new server.

I started to check everything and it seemed to be fine. The one thing I updated is Storage under Settings, to bring my music in the iMac file system. This worked however…. the rest of the DB disappear.. At the moment I have access only to the music in my drive.

I tried restarting the iMac. I also tried disable the storage and then I didn’t see any albums. I can bring the local music again but the main info from the db has disappeared..

BTW, while I was checking the settings through my iPad I changed the Roon Server Name under settings as it had the name of the previous setting in my PC.

I also tried to play with “focus” thinking that I am only viewing the local files but everything seems fine there.. what shall I try?

Thanks again Benjamin,

Nathan

ps I just tried “History” and the info is there, but no Albums show

@Nathan_Kelerstein ,

Thanks for getting back to us.

Could you please clarify how you managed the storage?

Did you simply delete the old path and add the music folder as a new one?

If so, you will need to restore the backup again. Instead of adding a new watched folder, click the three dots on the existing one, select the “Modify” option, and then adjust the path there.

Please let us know if that works for you.

Thanks!

@alex_h,

Thanks for getting back to me. I followed the instructions here (https://help.roonlabs.com/portal/en/kb/articles/migration). I believe I disable those folders in my original server, moved the library to the new computer and then updated in Roon settings.

I am not sure what happened but I have now access to both my local albums and my albums from Qobuz, and things look normal so far. I do have one issue: whenever the screen on iMac hosting the new Roon Server locks, I loose access to the Roon Server through my iPad.. this is problematic as the iMac is in a shared space, and also for energy savings purpose. I never had this issue with my old server in a PC when the screen got locked. I am not closing any programs and they should be running in the background..

Is there something you can suggest to fix this?

Thanks again!

Nathan

Hey @Nathan_Kelerstein,

That helps narrow it down. Since the library and Qobuz are back, the remaining issue is the Mac sleeping when the screen locks.

In order to fix it, we recommend using an app like Amphetamine to prevent your Mac from sleeping.

Our recommendation would be to set it up as shown in the screenshot below:

Thanks.

Hi @alex_h ,

Thanks for your reply. This seems to have been the solution, I am still testing but believe all is good.

Question, is it advisable to do a second Roon back up using iCloud, and if this is the case what is the best way to set this up? (or is it better to use Dropbox)?

Cheers,

Nathan

Hello @Nathan_Kelerstein ,

Glad to hear that @alex_h ‘s suggestions helped!

You can do a second Roon backup, sure, but Roon doesn’t have iCloud integration. In both Dropbox and iCloud backup, it is suggested that you selected a folder for Roon to backup to on your drive, and then add that folder in iCloud/Dropbox folders to sync, so the sync happens outside of Roon for best performance. Since the issue is solved, I’ll go ahead and mark it as such, happy listening!
