Thanks for writing in! Your iMac is an iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014), and Apple’s newest supported OS for that model is macOS Big Sur 11, which is what you’re running (11.7.11). It can’t officially go to macOS 12 (Monterey) or newer.
Current Roon requires macOS 12 or later, so your Mac has reached its limit: the build you have, 2.64 (1646), is essentially the last one it can run, that’s why it reads “outdated.” A newer build exists, but it needs an OS your Mac can’t install.
One thing worth clarifying: you’ve actually been running Roon 2.x this whole time, not 1.8, and it still works, it just won’t update any further on this hardware. From here you have two options:
Keep running your current build. It will continue to work for now, but it won’t receive updates, and over time newer remotes/ARC and streaming-service changes may not stay compatible.
Move your Roon Server to hardware that meets the macOS 12+ requirement, another Mac, a Windows PC, a Linux machine, a Nucleus/ROCK (NUC), or a supported NAS. Your library and settings can come across via a backup, and you’d be back on the fully supported current version. Given your ~108k-track library, this is the path we’d recommend for the long term.
If you’d like, let us know which direction you’re leaning and we can walk you through backing up and migrating your database to new hardware.
Circling back on this, we wanted to check whether you had a chance to consider the two paths we outlined for your Mac. Since your iMac is limited to macOS Big Sur 11 and current Roon now needs macOS 12 or later, the build you have is effectively the last one that machine can run, so it will stay on that older version unless the server moves to newer hardware. If you are leaning toward migration, we can help you back up the database and move your Roon Server to another Mac, Windows or Linux machine, a Nucleus or ROCK, or a supported NAS, and the Backup guide may help you get started. Let us know which direction you want to take or if you have any questions about the next step.
