· Hi, my 2012 MacMini w RoonCore won't open Roon anymore due to not being able to update the MacOS beyond 10.xx. That part is understandable. I just ordered A Nucleus One this morning. However, with a full NAS, backups stopped working on my MacMini, and I can't open Roon to do a new backup. Is there a workaround to get the backup working so that I will be able to restore to the Nucleus when it arrives? Thanks for the help!
You can temporarily reinstall version 2.64, which works with your outdated macOS. The download link is in the release notes:
Going forward, you need macOS 12 (Monterey), but most Intel Macs that don’t get the update from Apple can easily be updated with Open Core Legacy Patcher (OCLP):
Congratulations on the Nucleus One! That is going to be a fantastic upgrade from the 2012 Mac Mini, and it will make your Roon experience significantly snappier and more stable.
You have run into a classic “catch-22,” but there is a very straightforward workaround. You essentially need to install a “bridge” version of Roon that still supports your older macOS just long enough to perform a final backup.
Step 1: Install the Version (2.64)
Since the current version of Roon (2.65+) requires macOS 11 or 12, you need to roll back to Version 2.64. This version still supports older macOS versions and is fully compatible with our current database structure for backup purposes.
Download the Legacy Installer: You can find the links for the 2.64 installers in our official release notes here: Roon 2.64 Release Notes & Downloads.
Replace the App: Drag the 2.64 version into your Applications folder, choosing “Replace” when prompted.
Open Roon: It should now launch successfully on your Mac Mini.
Step 2: Perform the Backup
Once Roon is open, go to Settings > Backups.
Connect a USB thumb drive directly to the Mac Mini (this is the most reliable way to move the data to the Nucleus).
Select Backup Now and choose the USB drive as the destination.
Step 3: Migration to Nucleus One & Path Editing
Once your Nucleus One arrives and you have restored your backup, there is one critical step to ensure you don’t lose your play history or playlists:
Restore from Backup: During the Nucleus setup, choose “Restore from a Backup” and select your USB drive.
Check Storage Settings: Go to Settings > Storage. You will likely see your old NAS folders marked as “Unavailable” in red.
CRITICAL: Do Not Delete These Folders! If you delete the old “unavailable” path and add a new one, Roon will treat your music as brand-new files. This will break the links to your playlists and scrub your play history.
The “Edit” Workaround: Click the three dots next to the red/unavailable path and select Edit. Simply point that existing entry to the new network path on your NAS.
By editing the path instead of deleting it, you are telling Roon: “The files haven’t disappeared; they have just moved to this new hardware.”

Indeed! My Nucleus One arrives tomorrow, so that’s exciting! The MacMini was tweaked quite well and sounds very good! Hoping the Nucleus is as good or better sounding!
