Unable to run Roon server after updating Roon Optimized Core Kit (ref#3IADRU)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

Tell us what's going on

· Recently updated Roon Optimized Core Kit and I can't get the roon server software to run.

· Using Xfinity Gateway mode XB8. Rock is connected via ethernet thru a TP link TL-SG105 unmanaged ethernet switch.

Hey @Robert_Tokarz, welcome to the community, and thanks for the details so far.

Since this is happening after a Roon Optimized Core Kit update, we want to confirm whether the issue is at the Roon Server startup level or something in the ROCK environment itself.

Before we go further, please check a few things for us:

  1. Can you open the RoonOS WebUI for the ROCK machine, and does it show Roon Server as running or stopped?
  2. From the WebUI, try starting Roon Server manually and let us know what happens.
  3. If it still will not start, please tell us exactly what you see in the WebUI or on the machine after the update, including any error text or status messages.
  4. Also, confirm whether your ROCK is still reachable from your Roon Remote on the same network.

Your network layout looks fine on the surface, but the managed state in the WebUI will tell us a lot about whether this is a startup issue, a networking issue, or something related to the update itself. If you can, send a screenshot of the WebUI status page as well.

Once we have that, we can narrow this down and decide on the next step.

Yes, I can open RoonOS WebUI and it shows the Roon Server as Not Running. When I click the start button, it attempts to start it but I then get the message: Restart Error Roon Server cannot be successfully restarted. Please try rebooting, or contact. I have tried rebooting both thru the WebUI and manually to no success.

I believe I can reach ROCK thru Roon Remote because the WebUI is launching from the Find Roon OS button in Roon Remote. I can restart the server successfully from the WebUI.

I hope this information helps.

Wanted to see if you saw my post.

Hello @Robert_Tokarz

Thanks for your patience, and yes, we have your reply.

We cannot see your ROCK in our diagnostics and have not for six days. A working ROCK reports in on its own, so that gap tells us something genuinely stopped. It also means we are blind until you send logs by hand.

Even with Roon Server refusing to start, its logs will show why.

On Windows, in File Explorer’s address bar: \ROCK\Data
On a Mac, in Finder press Command and K and enter: smb://ROCK/Data

If asked for a username and password, enter Guest for both. Open the RoonServer folder, compress the Logs folder, rename the zip to Robert_Tokarz.zip, and upload it here:

https://workdrive.zohoexternal.com/collection/nocvrfc5b2ddab55140af8640f1d7ce13291e/external

Instructions with screenshots, ROCK section:

While you are in that folder, please test whether the drive still accepts writes. Copy any small file from your computer into the Logs folder, a photo or text document, anything. Then reboot the ROCK from the WebUI and check whether your file is still there.

If the copy is refused, or the file vanishes after the reboot, the internal drive has stopped accepting writes and that alone explains why Roon Server cannot start. It is a thirty-second test, and it rules in or out the most serious possibility.

Two other quick things.

In the WebUI, use the Reinstall button under Operating System and tell us the exact text it reports, including any number. Reinstalling does not touch your database or playlists.

And in a browser, open this and tell us whether it downloads or errors:

https://download.roonlabs.net/builds/roonbox-linuxx64-nuc4-usb-factoryreset.img.gz

That is where your ROCK fetches updates. We have had cases this month where an internet provider blocked it, which makes an update fail and leaves exactly the state you are in. If it downloads, delete the file, that is ruled out.

My folder did not have a RoonServer folder, however the reinstall through the WebUI worked and seems to have fixed all of my issues.

Thank you for your help.

Hey @Robert_Tokarz,

That’s great news, and we’re glad the WebUI reinstall got everything back on track. Thanks for following through on the checks, and enjoy the music while we go ahead and mark this one for closure.
