Number of Tracks in Library

Library of over 80,000 tracks

Description of Issue

I recently got a Mac Mini and wanted to create a new Roon Core on that computer. I set up that core, which required me to remove the core from my previous database location, which was on an M1 Max Macbook Pro.

I thought the new core had set up perfectly, until I noticed that certain songs that I listen to all the time had not been added to the Roon library, and they were not on the skipped tracks list. I tried adding manually to no avail. I noticed that Roon had stalled adding tracks to the library. But no number of re-scans or disabling and reenabling the database got it to resume adding tracks. I left it overnight, and still the number of tracks added was the same and the progress bar had not moved.

I found a thread here with steps to uninstall Roon, which I followed. Now I can’t get Roon to work on any computer. I can’t start a new database on my old computer because when I open the app, I get a message that says “There was an issue loading your library.” I also can’t get it to work on my Mac Mini because, despite having uninstalled the program, when I open it, it asks me if I want to connect to the core on my Mac Mini, which is confusing because I thought I had just uninstalled it!!! Or it asks me if i want to set up on this device, which is also confusing because the device is the Mac Mini. When I select that option, I just get a loading window with the Roon logo. When I select the option to connect to the core on this Mac Mini, then I get the same message: “There was an issue loading your library.”

I’ve now had Roon for just over two years, and I’ve not had success using the app on any consistent basis. Roon ARC doesn’t connect to my core when I’m away from home, and the Roon app on macOS has been so tremendously frustrating to use that I just use Tidal most of the time.

I’m frustrated, yes, but mostly I’m sad because the program in theory sounds amazing, and others have had great success enjoying their music using the app, but for some reason it’s just not for me. I’ve spent 10 hours now trying to get this to work now, and I think the time to give up on the app is drawing near.

@wkesquire, can you provide more information on what you mean by this statement? Did you backup your Roon database from within Roon and then restore it on the new mini?

Thanks for the reply. No, I’ve never backed up my core anywhere. When I wanted to set up the core on my new device I remember getting a message indicating that I could only have one core associated my account.

Also, in this scenario, I’d really just prefer to start all over from step 0 rather than to re-install and restore from a backup, since for a year now I’ve not been able to set the roon core up properly on my macbook pro (initially) and my mac mini (as of yesterday).

Maybe start reading Roon’s help pages from the introductory basics on if you haven’t taken the time yet, since not everything is self explanatory and you might spare yourself from much more trial and error, followed by agony⚠️

I’m not sure what I said in my earlier post to suggest that I had not taken the first step of reading the help pages. It may just be that I’ve misunderstood what I’ve read since I’m an audiophile and not also a software engineer.

And perhaps I’ve been less precise than others with more technical background than I have might be, and for that I apologize.

But I’ve read those pages and many threads and have had many conversations by text with friends who are longtime Roon users, and I’m here because my issues persist despite my best efforts to figure it out myself or without bugging others on this forum. I’m here because I need more tailored direction.

Update: I have been able to get the core running again on my Mac Mini, but it’s stuck again while adding music to library. It’s been at “Of 89190 tracks, 62855 added, 62855 identified” for 2 hours. When I previously used the Macbook Pro as my core, there were albums and tracks that were added to my library that for some reason are not adding to my library now.

One troubleshooting step I took was to create a Watched Folder that contains a selection of those missing files. Despite confirming that I have the correct file path and rescanning the folder, Roon has not been able to add those files.

Reading your posting history, ending in private messaging with support, and an unclear to me description of your current intentions, as well as confusing verbiage while describing your seemingly convoluted course of action triggered my response.

Maybe, taking a database backup from your old server instance then unauthorizing it during start up of the new install and restoring that backup could have made the ride a bit smoother (see here), unless your intention was to start form a clean slate.

But then, some of your files seem to cause problems.
Where are they located, do other replay applications find and play them correctly?

Maybe give us some description of file type, what application you generated and groomed them with.

As pictures tell more than a thousand words, insert enlightening screen shots.

There are probably many more details you could share, which seen obvious to you but not for us!

Considering your unfortunate Roon experience, it’s understandable that you tend to blame Roon for your misery.

But you obviously are a reflected and humble person, and I want to apologize for coming across as rudely trouncing you - I genuinely want to contribute to help you reach a smooth Roon experience once and for all!

Thanks @Marin_Weigel for your thoughtful follow up. Although my response was defensive, no offense taken. I admit that my language was imprecise, which would make assisting me in troubleshooting my issue challenging.

I genuinely wanted to start from a completely clean slate. I had only had my Mac Mini for a day, and I even considered doing a factory reset of the computer to get to a clean slate.

Now my prior post on this forum was days after I first signed up. I definitely made them without reading the helpful materials you shared, and I’m mortified to think how poorly they reflect on me!

I agree. Eventually, I just assumed that this was my main issue, so after re-installing Roon and restarting my computer, I began the setup process from Step 1 with the following changes: (1) I removed all the files from my Music folder into a separate folder, so that no files were added to my Roon library; (2) I linked my Tidal account; and (3) I added the local files I cared most about to my Music folder, at which point Roon added these files immediately, no issue. I’ve been adding files to my Music folder throughout the past days, and every song I’ve added to that folder appears in my Roon library. I’ve not found the files that caused Roon to stall while adding files to my library, but I’ve added basically all of the lossless local files I have to my Roon library now without issue. My Roon remote app and Roon ARC have worked well today, so fingers crossed that perhaps I’m in the clear now.

Noted! I hope I don’t have further issues, but if I do, I’ll be more descriptive in my initial post.

Thanks for taking the time to help. I sincerely appreciate it.
