I recently “upgraded” from an Netgear Nighthawk wifi network to a new Netgear Orbi wifi 6 mesh network. On the Nighthawk network, I used a Rock and the NAS (connected via same network switch) configured as a Network Share and hostname to connect to my music library (NAS). Worked flawlessly.
On changing to the Orbi/AT&T Router, although I can play anything via Roon, I cannot access to the music files stored on the NAS.
I didn’t change anything on the Synology NAS. I can access the NAS using network connected MAC or Windows Laptop, but Roon cannot. I’ve removed and tried to add back using the hostname, but I get a pop-up that says, “There was an unexpected error: UnexpectedError.”
I can use an IP address to get Roon to see the NAS, but understand this is not the best way for the long term.
I have researched the forum but have not found an answer yet (I did setup the router per recommended Roon settings) - Can anyone assist?
@Simon_Owen, did the LAN IP addresses change when you moved from the Nighthawk to the Orbi system? For example, from 192.168.aaa.bbb to 192.168.ccc.bbb, or even 10.0.aaa.bbb or 172.168.aaa.bbb? As both routers are made by Netgear, I would not expect major IP address changes, but it could be different.
How are the NAS and Synology connected to your network, directly to an Orbi mesh unit or via WiFi to the Orbi network? Is WiFi disabled on BGW320?
Hi Robert,
I cannot recall if the LAN IP address changed - probably, since I changed carrier to AT&T Fiber - their modem and router combo provided poor wifi coverage from the installed location which is why I changed over to the Orbi. I did immediately disable the wifi on the modem router (BGW320). I pull ethernet directly from the orbi into a 1 GB Netgear Switch and distribute to both the NAS and ROCK. I’ve checked that each device has its own IP: 10.x.x.xx.
Simon
I usually prefer to use the IP address for this sort of thing. To make this reliable, create a DHCP reservation in your router for the NAS. This will ensure it receives the same IP address if the router or the NAS itself is rebooted.
Since some time has passed on this thread, we wanted to check in. Were you able to set up the network share using the static IP address method suggested above?
