Usb dac output not working

Roon Core Machine

Windows 10, i7-3770, 8GB RAM

Networking Gear & Setup Details

Xfinity gateway, moca adapter to hardwire server, NordVPN splittunneling the 3 roon executables

Connected Audio Devices

HDMI to Sony TV - works fine
Headphone jack on PC - works fine

  • USB Audioquest Dragonfly dac/amp - only worked once, skips tracks until too many failures

  • USB to Peachtree Decco65 - only worked once, skips tracks until too many failures

I’ve rebooted and even reinstalled all roon software, but the usb only problem persists.

I don’t believe its a network issue as I get the same problem for locally stored files as well as tidal, and again on the other outputs there are zero playback issues.

Number of Tracks in Library

100

Description of Issue

USB ouputs only work 1% of the time. Once I stoped a track playing, it never worked again. It will skip tracks until too many failures. This issue does not happen on hdmi and headphone outputs.

I moved this to tinkering since Roon does not support VPN.

EDIT: OK, then. I moved it back to support.

Welcome to the community.

Is the Roon Server/Core also the system to which the DACs are connected?
Did you enable exclusive mode for the DAC audio devices?

Is it really necessary to immediately move it to thinkering without even asking whether he can try without the VPN turned off? Seems harsh.

It’s likely the VPN is you problem even if split tunneling roon out of it. My Mac as an example works fine when the Forticleint VPN I have to use for work is inactive all USB devices attached to Mac are shown and play fine. As soon as VPN is active then it looses them all after a short period and is no longer seen as an audio zone.

Remote will work fine but not audio. Disable the VPN and see if it works. Just running VPN software on same machine as core seems to block Roons discovery protocols regardless of split tunneling. It is not recommended to have any active VPN running on the core. If you where using Roon over VPN it’s not supported at all, but your not here.

Jim he’s is not using Roon via VPN it’s split out so this is not truly correct. But is still likely the cause.

It doesn’t sound like that’s what he’s seeing, though. Has anyone looked at the log files to see if there’s a clue in there?

And yes, turn off the VPN, and see if the problem persists. First thing to try.

Thanks for the support everyone!

I hooked up a toslink cable to see if I could bypass the USB issue and that also had the same error.

Then I tried exclusive mode to see if that made any difference and it did not.

Next I disabled the VPN and viola, all digital outputs working correctly.

I understand this use is not supported, but is there any advice or posts I could be pointed to for tinkering with the use of digital outputs while simultaneously using VPN tunneling?
