Use Tags with "match-all"

I try to use my Tags in a way that I can filter my Albums or Tracks using “match all”.

For example: I select the Tags “Hard Bop” and “Drum Solo”. I want to see all tracks or albums in the hardbop genre with a drum solo. But Roon combines the tags with “match any”, so I also see hardbop tracks without a drum solo and tracks with a drum solo from other genres.

Using your Tags with “match all” doesn’t work if you click the Tag icon next to the little heart. Here you can only use positive (+) or negative (-), not “match all” or “match any”.

The other option would be to go to Focus, because here you can actually choose between “match all” or “match any”. But the Tags don’t show up in Focus!

Does anyone has the same problem? I’m a new user; was it like this all the time?
Is there no way to see your Tags in the Focus window?
Is there a trick to accomplish this in another way?

Thank you very much for all reactions. This is very frustrating!

I use Roon on a PC, software version 2.57, build 1598

You mean “boolean operators” for search.
There are already multiple Featurerequests for this Topic.
Many Years old unfortinatly. I gave it up

Also no way to see your Tags in the Focus window?

@Peter_Van_Velthoven since Hard Bop is a genre, you could click on the tag, then use the Focus feature to select Hard Bop Genre tracks (or albums. depending on how you use the tag). This assumes that Hard Bop has been set as a genre for these albums, but if it hasn’t that should be a straightforward update.

Thank you for the reaction!

The hardbop thing was just an example. I would also like to use “match all” with other Tags I made that are not readily available in Focus, like single A-sides or moods, etc. I think it very strange that your own Tags are not integrated in the Focus environment. Apparently it used to work that way, but they’ve changed it.

Essentially the only thing I’d like to do, is to use my own Tags with “match all” (and not exclusively with “match any”).

Ah, understood, and I understand being frustrated by Focus’ limitations. I’d love to be able to use the logical operators across the various Focus elements (genre, label, performer, release date, etc.). I should put in a feature suggestion.

Search for Boolean, it exists

People have been asking for that for ages. It was released for three days once about four years ago, I think as a mistake when they were trying to release Boolean logic for genres.

I think the reason it has never been permanently released is that the database is not efficient enough to run such a query without extremely long delays. I figured out a workaround using the negative filter but a query takes 5 to 10 minutes to come back if it comes back at all and doesn’t just hang Roon.

So, probably don’t hold your breath

The Boolean operator is great, and really expanded the ability to Focus inside a single category (Performer, Composer, Label, etc.). I want to be able to use Boolean across those categories as well. I’m a Brian Eno fan. I’d love to be able to create a focused playlist for albums that Eno played on AND albums he produced. I have yet to figure out how to do that without using tags, which i don’t find optimal since i have to actively apply tags. Admittedly my approach only works if the credits are properly applied, but I’m pretty consistent with my album tagging using mp3Tag. I also admit this is an edge use case and the definition of a first world problem

While a limited operator choice exists, what I meant was that a feature request for full Boolean support already exists

Ah, I misunderstood what you were saying, @Suedkiez . Apparently I’ve already voted there as well :joy:
