Variable sample rates yes if you change manually in Audio MIDI. Not auto switching of sample rates though. This is the exact reason why I use an iPad as USB source to feed HQPlayer, at my desk.
If Apple Music app itself were able to operate in a kind of ‘Exclusive Mode’ this would be great too (like Tidal Desktop app and Qobuz app both do). Then there’d be no need to use iOS at my desktop.
Can you share screenshot of your current Config page?
Don’t forget I need you to try to reproduce a problem I had , assuming everything is working reliably for you now
Well, If I remember correctly, Jussi says, that feeding HQP via audio class 2 interface as backend NAA supports autosample rate switching too. This opens “musician” audiointerfaces too (if fed by AM on input and(?) pass through to its output?) Jussi please correct me, if going totally wrong here. However, I believe I read audio class 2 input to HQP from NAA backend is only implemented for Linux NAA? So, no Windows or Mac NAA running usb class 2 audio interfaces for HQP backend input via this more exotic way?? @jussi_laako + Did not try any of this as not producing stuff on Linux. At least so far. ((For Apple Music however, regardless of Audiointerface, you still need to feed with automatic sample rate output from AM App, so the player software itself. So, you are still with iDevice running AM. There is no AM for Linux today, same with Windows. Android AM not changing sample rate output as of Android, maybe on some special Android hardware. there are diffrences how Androids USB driver got implemented. Lenovo and LG are not too bad in my experience from the past. Do not know. AM via Sonos (or Bluesound?) digital output to HQP: no hires or even lossless from Apple send to those devices directly today))
@Michael_Grant, did you check on AM Atmos working fine, doing an easy listening test? It should via this way, but better to try imo. You can do by just listening when switiching or you only switch on iOS on AM Music settings from Atmos “always on” to Atmos “off” and back again. If it takes time and changes in output volume than AM switches and changes between Atmos and Stereo stream. If there is no pause or volume change in output when switching, then is not doing Atmos but only stereo + BTW if Mac OS would support auto samplerate switching we all could save a lot of time and money Not talking about this Amazon Ultra folks again
I can only comment on what I have tested myself. I bought UpBoard because Jussi has it himself and recommended it.
If you buy something different and get it working, add it to this thread ! Otherwise better (and less risk and $$) to use something that people have working.
We have tried USB-C port of RPi4 before and it failed.
I’ve logged several hundred hours with the UpBoard now - reliable performance.
Did try NI Maschine MK2 on Mac shortly, but was not successful so far. Just a short try done. Have a cool Yamaha mixing desk with built-in USB interface too, but not tried so far. Think about an Jussi upsampled Synthesizer or mixer If you dare to use those setup for live performances Ok, we better do not talk about any latency for this scenario. But still…And you could use Convolution Engine too…Maybe HQP convolution engine is even much more interesting for those musician setups! You adapt IR to the room where you are performing…etc…Of if you are making money with mobile DJing. You adapt convolution engine to the place where you got the order to DJ…Many fantastic option with HQP for comparable little money imo. If it really works for those setups. Maybe will try with my Yamaha Mixer. But would need answer please, if working with Mac NAA too with class 2 input to HQP or only Linux NAA (?). // Mself using a 16 channel of those here. But I like it MG Serie - Übersicht - Mischpulte - Professional Audio - Produkte - Yamaha - Deutschland “USB Audio (MG16XU) 2 IN / 2 OUT USB Audio Class 2.0 compliant, Sampling Frequency: Max 192 kHz, Bit Depth: 24-b” and " * Kompatibel mit dem iPad (Version 2 oder höher) über das Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit / Lightning auf USB Kabel" ++ Will try and post. Pls. give me some time for the test. ++ Those Class 2 mixers are not too expensive imo and you are quite flexible, what you are feeding to it. As it is a mixer you can switch between inputs for output Ok, no Coax input for those little ones, however from USB and compatible with iDevice via CCK. Here a small one for ca. 220 USD (did not try them all so far by myself): Amazon.com + But as USB Class 2.0 is required only by Jussi spec (@jussi_laako ) all stuff should work imo, even less expensive? Anyway, will try and spam you here again with that. Just give me time for test as it does not have such prio to me as myself super happy with Pi and 44.1 input only to feed HQP. AM is for Atmos please at my use cases and for mobile on iphone of course. but matter of preference of course. and i am starting to love new AM AI for recommendations. Roon (radio) will be canceled soon…Spotify Premium did cancel yesterday already…lol…((((Did read an interview with Sennheiser brothers in Handelsblatt yesterday, they sold headphone biz as you know. Interesting was, they said headphones are just the entrypoint to a ecosystem today. Like Apple Music…and the Beat/Apple headphones and their spatial H1 or whatever chips…So! Jussi has to come up with a NAA headphone or at least Brian with RAAT (Audeze) headphone Rumours say there will be a Sonos headphone…)))) @dabassgoesboomboom // ((And if you like a HQP free time using your mixer, just use the analog XLR or line outputs or headphone monitoring jack incl. the digital effects from Yamaha in my case…Do not know which DAC Yamaha is using, but should not be too bad I guess. Motu offers ESS audio interfaces and others too of course… When you feed from mixer via USB Class 2 to HQP the DAC of the mixer does not matter anyway as not used. So, if you use “cheap stuff” in production than you need Jussi´s magic to get a kuhl sound from what you produced…lol…But, HQP Pro is too expensive for myself as a hobbyist musician only…))
PS Still have my Qobuz Abo. Hoping they will survive that big fishes wave!

PPPPS Well, I have one of those too. NI Traktor Control D2 incl. Traktor software 3.0. But I guess, here are not too many DJs around that want this tested with HQP - especially its convolution engine? D2 has a built in USB hub. “Standard” USB Class 2 Mixer devices however are much more interesting for normal home usage with HQP imo. But not tested by myself so far. Anyway, those devices are mass market in all quality steps (and price ranges) and sizes (for mobile), that you want to have.
+++ Final Edit on this before trying myself, there is a pretty fresh thread about USB Class 2 input. Including the Pi and Jussi´s comments about this. HQPlayer USB class 2 input (NAA, HQPe) - Software - Audiophile Style ++ According to this thread, Pi 4 will not do automatic samplerate switching “today”…
Thanks for the additional info. Beyond my reach, at the moment.
I don’t want to add any more hardware to my audio systems just to get new features. It’s been a stretch to get a MacBook Pro and an iPad Pro, a pair of iFi DACs, an audiophile set of headphones (T1 3rd Gen) and some BT headphones (AirPods Max) past the budget police. I’m currently in replacement-of-failed-component-only mode.
I have a home theater set up in the basement. It’s the control center for a whole-house audio system infrastructure that was installed in 1994. I have Sonance in-wall speakers from '94 in 5 rooms, and their volume is controlled by physical rheostats installed like light switches in the same rooms as the speakers. I have an aging Marantz SR7007 as my AVR and an old Denon stereo amp as a power amp for the house speakers. Airplay works great for streaming Apple Music to the Marantz, which in turn feeds the Denon, which powers the room speakers. I can’t justify NUCs or NAAs or anything else to replace or supplement what 51% of the Partnership considers “good enough”.
So I’ll listen to my ripped collection and TIDAL filler with HQPlayer and Roon while sitting at my laptop, and I’ll listen on the go with BT, and I’ll listen to Apple Music lossless with my DAC and headphones on my iPad (which does do automatic sample rate switching). That may be “slumming it” in the audiophile world, but it’s pretty darn good anywhere else. I’m grateful for what I have!
Thank you again Jussi! So did hook up my little Yamaha MG UX12 to my Ubuntu Server running NAA right now instead of HQP Desktop. Using HQP Desktop at iMac now for test purposes. Right now getting sound via NAA backend “lenovo: XGU USB” at iMac HQPDesktop , so using classic USB interface where you have to select Audio Sampelrate at HQP. Funnywise it does not matter which samplerate i pick, it plays on >>all rates i pick (right now feeding analog input only to yamaha mixer please. no digital input at the moment. but this could be used for “old” synthies or other fantastic devices with analog output. Yamaha is doing AD with up to 192/24…do not know the chip. NI ist using Cirrus Logic CS4385 at MK3 audio-interface…) Myself does not know, how to start playback with HQP Desktop when selecting USB Class 2.0 as input… Which button to press to start playback I mean please…
Current setup, standard Audio Interface only - no “lenovo: Class 2” right now…
All samplerates play for the same stream.Blackhole and Hifiberry super sensitive on this…funny…But still do not know how start playback on HQP Desktop for USB Class 2 input…
Edit: Like the sound from analog input via Yamaha to HQP Prob. have some DSP stuff running…lol…
Edit02: Feeding digital 44.1 from Ubuntu itself to Mixer via classic audio can still use in HQP 44.1 or 48 audio playback. But starting with 88.4 sounds terrible for 44.1 digital input stream. Anyway like the sound already, I am getting for 44.1!!! So via this way all stuff from Linux can be fed to HQP, e.g.Clementine(?), VLC, whatever / not tested by myself), this should all work with Pi too as it is Linux (not checked so far)…>>But still no automatic samplerate switching as still not using Class 2 as NAA backend…except HQP not sensitive for 44.1 or 48 select for digital input at sample rate. analog input works whatever sample rate you select in HQP? Funny…Maybe specific to the Yamaha mixer here. ++ Anyway still hunting for complete auto sample rate switching for digital input…
It likely has ASRC for the input, like Mutec MC-1.2 for example. So it can have two different rates and does conversion between the rates. Of course this will have negative impact on the sound, and especially because it will bake-in any jitter into the data itself.
Could be that this is not active for analog inputs, only for digital inputs.
You know it all At least I have a “better” analog input now too to HQP. So far had for analog input only the Sonos connectors feeding little Hifiberry via S/PDIF. So using the built in Sonos AD Chip. Will experiment further with the Yamaha and post only if significant progress. Soundcloud 48 digital on Ubuntu sounds nice Guess Spotifiy too but could not get it running. Maybe because of Spotify connect? Do not use Spotify anymore - till the Swedish folks come up with at least lossless! Like they had promised 3000 years ago! +++ Will connect my Grandma´s tube radio now to HQP!
Ok, here is an update please on this. I managed to feed HQP now from Shairport-Sync using the Yamaha Mixer. Shairport-Sync is the best Airplay endpoint implementation I know so far. There are reasons, why e.g. Sonore is using it and others as well. Shairport offers a zillion of options for Airplay. Take a look at github better at the excellent config file itself. Partly Shairport options are overlapping with HQP. Just for fun, I did switch Shairport Samplerate to 88200. guess using SoX (Jussi will laugh about me for sure. But just as a test for the options, if they are working with my Shairport-Sync running on Ubuntu Server. And yes, they do!) Shairport-Sync supports spatial audio. You can switcht the ALAC decoder algorithms, many many many more. Feeding HQP now from Shairport-Sync is a personal dream setup for me Let´s see how stable it will run now! PS There is a Airplay 2 version too for Shairport-Sync if you want to have that for multi-room.
Here I am feeding Shairport-Sync from Roon. Shairport-Sync is hooked up to HQP afterwards, what you can not see at the Screenshot. Ok. Only problem left, how do I get HQP Output back to Roon
Great post @Jeff_Bellune ! These parts made me chuckle
I’m like you. The music comes first !
Multi-room speaker setup in a '94 ! house? How cool is that!
Let’s see if the next macOS updates (October) brings what we want, to the Apple Music app: ability to choose output, direct to available soundcards (just like on iOS), from the Music app, itself.
We built the house that year. Our general contractor looked at us like we were nuts when we told him what we wanted! We had to hire a firm from the big city to install it. It was originally a multi-room audio/video system, but VHS and LaserDisc gave way to DVD and Blu-ray. Dolby Pro Logic gave way to Dolby and DTS surround, then TrueHD and now Atmos. After five kids, the budget and the clock just couldn’t keep up with technology so the video part shrunk to just the theater. I think 7.1 is as far as we can go with this.
I am as well. Mostly for an exclusive mode in AM. It would make things so much nicer!
