Various Artists compilation issue

Hi,

I have a big issue.

I want to make a compilation by many songs, with different artists.

I tag them all in the SAME album and in “Album Artist” i gave them all “Various Artists”.

I put them in ONE only folder.

I put a FOLDER.JPG inside the folder as cover of this compilation.

But I won’t work… Roon continue to identifies songs as single albums.

I just want it to recognize a compilation with inside these differents songs.

Help!

Sometimes Roon is too clever.
In the meantime, try Merge albums

It’s ok for a couple or a dozen of songs, but, when you have 1000 tracks in a your custom compilation how to discover them all and merge?

Also, I want to put day after day new tracks of these “mine” compilation without the fuss of merge them.

There is a way?

To be more specific, I made compilations of songs that aren’t on Tidal and that aren’t full albums.

Would you be better off making a playlist?
How about
Create playlist Section 3.

Then add path to your headings, and filter by your desired location. Select all and add to playlist.

I will experiment with the two advices that you gave me.

I remain sure though that the neatest and clever solution is to have a compilation of various artists that I can populate everyday without too tricky things to do.

Try using FOCUS/Inspector/Track Count = 1.

That will give you all the single-track albums. Then SELECT ALL and Merge.

If you can find a focus that works (like @John_V’s idea) then you can use a bookmark to easily get and return to your list. This will automatically update as you add your tracks.
Thence play, shuffle etc.

The focus inspector by local disk path could be a solution, then, merge albums into one. Experimenting.

But, if I do a simple question:

How to create a compilation by myself that works like a compilation without using all the workarounds above?

I’m not quite sure what you’re asking for, but does this help?
Having selected an album (or several, perhaps by focusing on various artists,)
edit, scroll down and select compilation set yes

I suspect those tracks are using Roon Meta data rather than the file tags you created.

My guess is you want to group all of your individual tracks so that they appear under a heading of your choosing. Right?

Short answer: not now ( do not think). Roon uses the album model for IDing and displaying. It hasn’t yet expanded that definition to include user-created albums. But I haven’t explicitly tried it. If you do, let us know.

I want to create a user album, yes, or better, a user compilation. Because I already created a custom album and it works. A compilation is what here I try to achieve.

Yes, I make a folder, same album name, same album artist name, one only folder.jpg, but it stills put around albums making a mess. I want to try the merge album function (crossing my fingers).

Marco, just know that Roon does not abide by folder boundaries. It will rearrange your music regardless of its physical location.

So, Roon will “distribute” individual cuts based album ID rather than folder contents.

You’ll need to tell Roon to prefer the tags over its own Meta data for these tracks. This is achieved using the Edit menu (via the three vertical dots on tracks and album.)

But this is dangerous because just because I want a “single tracks” folder to be seen as one only album/compilation it will maybe ruin many other things that Roon did good.

Prefer file tags instead that Roon tags FOR ONLY a specific folder instead could be a solution yet…

It’s not. Roon doesn’t touch your files*. I’m suggesting you make the change for those files you have added to your virtual album only (those in the folder you mention.) If this doesn’t work for you, revert the change by selecting Prefer Roon over File.

What you are doing is atypical. It would make more sense to use playlists or the tags. Nonetheless, if that’s what you want to do you need to disassociate these tracks (files) from the original album they belong.

Try it with a handful if you’re not convinced.

*Roon will delete files if you tell it to do so.

Would a Playlist be a simpler solution here ?

Immensely so. But then, what’s the challenge in that?

Hi,

I experimented much, with all the advices above, nothing really work, even say Roon to read tags from files (on that single folder) didn’t work.

I will try to explain better than I can, what I want to reach.

I use Tidal as my first source for music but, as you know, many songs are not on it.

About albums or singles or EPs not an issue, just import them to Roon from local disk using a path and the albums are absolutely recognized by Roon and mixed with Tidal’s without any issue.

But, there are a number of tracks that are not album either they are not singles or EPs, they are single tracks.

I made two folders (and paths for Roon):

  • Non Tidal kind A music
  • Non Tidal kind B music

First method failed: COMPILATION

I took these tracks, gave them the same album name (i.e. “Non Tidal kind A music”), gave a FOLDER.JPG image, gave the same “Artist Album”.

Roon makes totally a mess, no matter what I do (prefer file tags, mark “compilation”, etc.).

Second method: MERGE ALBUM WITH FOCUS

Same stuff but this time I didn’t write anything on “Album” tags, just leave it empty. When I try to merge Roon will understand many weird things, numberting weird tracks numbers, seeing weird disks number (1, 7, 94, etc!).

I don’t know what to do, surely, I won’t import tracks and use playlist or tags, because they will make a very DISORDER in the Album view and because I want to see these single tracks in the Album view.

But, even if it works, for hundreds of albums that are in my local disk I Always prefer Roon to import with it’s own tags instead to prefer file tags.

Unlucky, I cannot specify a kind of import separately for each path.
