Volume display just changed (how do I get percentages instead of decibels)?

Roon Core Machine

Running Version 2.0 build 1303
on a Delta server

Just installed the new PSAudio AirLens. Flipped dip switch 6 to permit Roon to control the volume.

But instead of Roon displaying 0 to 100, it goes from -80db to 0db.

That’s a lot of negative numbers…

I’m sure it’s a dumb question, but how do I tell it to do it the usual way?

Thanks.

Since dB is displayed, it would seem that Roon is controlling volume using DSP. It would appear that the AirLens doesn’t offer hardware volume control via Roon. This can be confirmed from Device Setup > Volume control–please share a screenshot of the dropdown. What options are selectable?

Hi @seth_Godin1,

Thank you for posting and we’d be happy to provide some clarity.

If the Volume Control on the AirLens is set to the Up position, this will force a Fixed Volume setting in Roon (displayed as the gain, in dB, rather than a volume percentage).

Please set the Volume Control to “Enable” (I believe this is the down position). You may then need to adjust the Device Setup settings for the AirLens Zone as @mjw suggested above. Please let us know what dropdown options are available for Volume Control. You should see either DSP Volume or Device Volume available.

We’ll keep an eye out for your response.

thanks @connor and thanks @mjw

Indeed, dip 6 was ‘down’ for enable.

the two choices are:

Device Volume and
Fixed Volume

when I pick Fixed, I get no options.

When I pick Device, I get the DB options.

Hope that’s useful.

@seth_Godin1, the AirLens has similar options to my transport. In practice, this means you have two options:

  • Adjust volume using the preamp; volume is set to fixed in Roon (this is my preferred option), and
  • Adjust gain using Roon (DSP volume), which displays the dB scale.

Unfortunately, the AirLens doesn’t expose hardware volume for Roon to control volume using the method you prefer, i.e., a 0-100 scale.
