Roon interface volume plus and minus buttons (+/-) sometimes get stuck [Fixed with Build 1364/1365)

Just to chime in, I’ve experienced this a couple times. Using Roon nucleus, Roon app and Denon AVR app w/Iphone. Checking the iphone control panel the volume is randomly at max level after previously lowering it. Fortunately, it hasn’t affected the actual volume going to speakers. The up/down volume control on iPhone is normally tied to volume on AVR app volume contriol so maybe there is some interaction going on.

@support

Today I experienced this for the first time after using Roon for a few years!

I have subsequently been able to reproduce it relatively consistently. If it helps let me know and I’ll add some details.

Hey @Hectorson,

Thank you for letting me know! A few follow-up questions for you:

  1. What are the specific steps you take to reproduce this issue?
  2. Does this happen on all of your remote devices?
  3. Do you have airplay enabled at all when this issue occurs?
  4. Does this affect specific endpoints? Does the same issue happen when only playing to your system output?

It would be helpful to the team if we could get an updated set of logs from the affected mobile devices as well:

  • First toggle “Save logs to Files on next startup” from your iOS Settings for the Roon App.
  • Reproduce the issue.
  • Access your Files App on the phone and upload the log file here.

Quick breakdown of setup first.

Core is ROCK on a NUC
Remote in question is an android phone running 13.
Roon Builds are up to date as of today and I’m on 2.0 not 1.8

Not sure how to enable logging on android for remote.

I can reproduce it on four different zones:

  1. Meridian MS600
  2. DietPi
  3. Chromecast Speaker
  4. Windows Laptop as endpoint

Haven’t been able to reproduce when using Windows PC as Remote or test any other android/ios remotes.

The problem arises when inputting multiple volume commands. In quick succession, best reproduced by tapping + and - alternately varying speeds. Normally will show within 30s.

I experienced the same problem a few days ago & was unable to break the maximum volume cycle (after reducing the volume & closing the control “frame” the volume immediately went back to Maximum) on my iPad 12.9 (3rd generation).
I can’t reproduce it at the moment but will capture logs if the problem reoccurs.

Description of Issue

Just got an iPhone SE 2022 model to use as a small device to remote control Roon. I’m currently only using a pair of Sonos Fives due to having building work carried out but this issue was happening when using other equipment and appears only related to the iPhone/iPads as it does it all the time but not with my Android phone.

If I set my iPhone volume to minimum (not ringtone, just media control) and got into Roon, when I close the Roon app my iPhones volume jumps to near 100% and on occasion full. I have tried iPads and this happens on them all (3 for kids).

Lower iPhone volume again. Go in to Roon (Sonos Fives at 10% volume say) and exit app the iPhone goes back to near full volume.

Is this a iOS Roon app issue or an iOS device issue?

Thanks

Just found another post where someone is experiencing nearly the same. This was last year though.

Can we have an option in settings of Roon to disable iOS volume buttons from controlling the volume of endpoints etc. or is there already this feature and I’ve missed it.

I find it odd if my endpoints volumes are at low levels why the iPhone/iPads would jump to 100% when closing the app.

It only started happening after a roon software update.

Happened to me the other day, full power into 105 dB horns could have caused some very serious and expensive damage.

I don’t normally use iPhones or iPads with roon because of that issue but forgot as I was using the iPad to setup a new amp.

Really annoying that it’s been ongoing for over a year.

Eeek. 105dB. Ear drum popping.

I’ve seen a few discussions in other threads. I recall reading Roon were looking into what they can do. I think disabling the function that allows phone (iPhone) volume buttons to be active. I don’t mind the slide option or +/- controls on screen. Yeah, think I’ll look at an Android device for Roon control if no fix in the pipeline. I like the iOS devices more than Android though.

Roon, @danny @enno @benjamin any input you can share would be cool. Thanks in advance.

Hey @Menzies,

Thanks so much for taking the time to write in, and my sincerest apologies for the sudden increase in volume! This is an issue we’re actively investigating.

If possible, are you able to share a timestamp (date, time) of when the issue occurred? With that, please use the directions found here and send over a set of logs to our File Uploader so we can take a closer look into what might be going on at the time of the volume spike.

In the meantime, we do have a short-term workaround that sets up automation to avoid any additional issues while we work on a fix:

This involves downloading the ‘Shortcuts’ app from the app store.

After downloading this app, follow the steps below:

  1. Locate and open the Shortcuts app.
  2. If you don’t see an Automation choice, but you do see < Shortcuts at the top of the screen, click it.
  3. Click Automation.
  4. Click Create Personal Automation.
  5. Scroll down the New Automation screen until you find App, and click it.
  6. Click Choose, next to App.
  7. Find and select Roon.
  8. Click Done at the top.
  9. Select the radio button for Is Closed.
  10. Deselect the radio button for Is Opened.
  11. Click Next at the top.
  12. Click Add Action.
  13. In the search bar, type: Volume.
  14. Select Set Volume.
  15. Adjust Set volume to to the appropriate %.
  16. Optionally turn off Ask Before Running.
  17. Click Done at top.

Please let me know if this workaround is functional for you while we continue to deep dive this issue :+1:

Hi Benjamin

Thank you forcoming back to me.

I’ve uploaded the logs file.

I replicated the issue at 22:38 UK time.

I’ll test the Shortcut tip shortly and will advise if it’s a workaround.

Let me know if I made a mistake .zip’ing the logs file.

Cheers

Edit: Shortcut automation setup and works. Volume goes to 100% upon closing the app and the automation kicks in and lowers it to the value I set (15%). This’ll work. I just can’t then enter the equipment’s (Sonos in this case) app until after the automation takes place, which is very quick.

Without the automation and forget to lower the volume of the phone and enter the equipments app and then alter the volume, the equipments volume jumps to 100%. As per @ChrisRoon mentioned.

Let me know if this doesn’t make sense.

Cheers

Thank you for the info @Menzies!

As a follow-up, I also see you have an Android 12 as well as a iPad set up as remotes. Do you ever see this issue happen on either of those devices or is it only your iPhone?

Just on the iOS devices.

Happens on iOS 15.6.1, 15.7 & 16.1 beta 3 (20B5056e).

On Android 12 it’s is very stable.

I also have this issue, Roon 2.0 (1127) on iOS 16.0.2, iPhone 13 Pro, Roon Core 2.0 (1128).
This has started happening since I updated to 2.0 last week. I also updated iOS 15 → 16 last week, so that could also be a factor.

I managed to wake my baby a few times blasting out audio at 100% volume before realising what was happening!

@ChrisRoon are we talking about the same issue? This is concerning the volume level on the iOS device itself rather than the roon devices it is being used to control. I assume you don’t have 105dB horns plugged directly into your phone :-)

In my case the iphones volume would go to max when exiting the Roon app and then when back in the Roon app if I altered the volume of my music it would go to full as if the iPhones volume was matched on the audio device being used.

On Android it doesn’t happen.

Hey @Menzies and @glob,

My apologies for the delay here, there is progress being made but we’re still very much investigating the potential root cause of this issue.

A few follow-up questions for you:

  1. What are the specific steps you take to reproduce this issue?
  2. Does this happen on all of your remote devices (@Menzies we know it’s only happening in iOS for you)?
  3. Do you have airplay enabled at all when this issue occurs?
  4. Does this affect specific endpoints? Does the same issue happen when only playing to your system output?

It would be helpful to the team if we could get an updated set of logs from the affected mobile devices as well:

Thanks @glob and @Menzies

No need to apologise. You guys are busy bees.

I’m happy with the workaround Automation. :grinning:

  1. I open the Roon app, browse through a couple of screens, then it sets the volume on my iPhone to 100%, occasionally it will keep setting the volume to 0% too.
Sometimes it only happens after I’ve been using the app for a little while, other times it happens immediately on opening.
Using the volume buttons on the phone will usually trigger it.

  2. I’ve just tested on my iPad, same build of roon, but iOS 15.6.1 and it is happening there too. Although that only seems to be setting volume to 0%

  3. I have a couple of airplay devices on the network, but I don’t have them enabled in Roon.

  4. I enabled local iPhone output to test this. It seems to happen regardless of which endpoint is selected.

I faced this problem in the past and it was fixed through an iOS app update. This problem has resurfaced with the recent 2.0 upgrade. It happens very frequently.

I would also recommend setting up volume limiting in the meantime, while we get to the bottom of this issue:
