· I installed macOS Golden Gate, version 27 and I can no longer see my Weiss 501 dac in order to stream to my stereo system.
Tell us about your home network
· I have a Comcast router. I see the problem mentioned on your community postings, but it's suggesting a temporary fix in the terminal settings that Apple said not to do. Please help.
The MacOS 27 update contains deep security restrictions that falsely flag Roon as a thread and restrict its access to the network interface. This prevents Roon from performing any network discovery when you’re hosting Roon Server on a Mac.
Obviously, this is a huge and sudden imposition on Roon users who rely on Macs. Apple isn’t likely to change anything on their end, so the team is urgently working to release a workaround that prevents MacOS 27 from restricting Roon. We will post updates as soon as they are available on the main banner for this issue on Roon Community on the homepage.
In the meantime, you can enter a few commands in the Terminal app on MacOS (Applications → Utilities → Terminal) that will force MacOS to safelist Roon. This will help you use your Weiss 501 in the meantime as we we work towards a solution. Here is a guide:
Apple support advised me to not change the code in the terminal, so I’ll have to wait for your update. At this point, I can’t use my subscription to Roon!
In your description below, are you referring to the Roon app and Roon server to be one and the same? I have my music stored on my Mac desktop and I stream to my Weiss DAC using my Roon app.
To answer your question first: on your setup they are one and the same. Roon Server is bundled inside the Roon app, so when you open Roon on your Mac, the server is running there too. That is why both need network permission from macOS.
Since launching Roon Server directly did not help, the macOS 27 section of this article is the next step:
On the Terminal concern: these are not code changes to macOS. They write a standard macOS setting that tells the system which addresses on your own network are allowed, using Apple’s own defaults command. The article has the exact commands to undo it at the bottom, so nothing here is permanent.
In short, please do the following:
Run the first command in the “Find Your Network Address” section. It only reads your settings and changes nothing. If the netmask it returns is anything other than 0xffffff00, please stop there and post the output here instead.
Run both commands in “Apply the Workaround”, substituting your own address. Please keep 224.0.0.0/4 exactly as written, since that is what lets Roon discover the Weiss.
Restart the Mac, then check Settings > Audio.
Before you start, please also check System Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network and confirm both Roon and Roon Server are listed and on. If they are already on, please switch each one off and back on.
If the 501 is still missing after that, please let us know and we will pick it up from there.
Wanted to follow up on this. Are you still seeing this issue at the present time? We released a Roon hotfix to correct this recently. If the 501 is still missing, please let us know, and we can pick it up from there.
Please note, if we don’t hear back from you this thread may close automatically soon. If the thread auto-closes and you need further assistance, please submit a reopen support request via the technical support help form below and specify that the issue should be reopened. Thank you.
Great to hear the update corrected the issue. We will mark this thread as solved, and if you need anything else in the future, just let us know. Enjoy your music!
