What Slows Roon Down?

Interesting. I thought I was the only who’s been seeing this. It all started for me with an update during the week of Nov 13, 2023. Most of the time, I have performance like Craig Watson. The Roon app keeps losing contact with my Nucleus+ and I have to kill it (IOS) and start it again.

In any case, I appreciate the information above. I’ll have to try some of the suggestions. I’ll also open a support case a heap another one on what seems like a large pile of problems.

After a few days my delight at experiencing near instant Roon vanished. A reboot of the PC sort of fixed it for awhile but it seems hit or miss if albums display promptly or appear to go through an agonising wait. I see no rhyme or reason for this - why one album will swiftly appear, yet another will take ages to load. I have experienced odd problems with Windows Explorer in the past so maybe it is linked to a M/S glitch rather than one in Roon?

Just a cursory observation, it may or may not help some,
Running Roon Core on an i7 v10 NUC, 3k albums on a USB attached SSD and I experienced slow down issues some time ago…. Remote device is primarily iPad, some iPhone and Kindle Fire HD8.
The ‘simple’ fix for me was to clear the image cache on each device, clearly this had grown exponentially and was searching for available space… So not a clear Roon issue…
No issues since I cleared that down and do so now every couple of weeks.
Hope that assists someone

Editing stuff in Roon over a continued period always grinds it to a halt I find. There are memory issues in this area and never been addressed. It’s worse on a phone. Just grouping albums which isn’t a hard task eventually slows Roon down it becomes unusable then crashes. I put a ticket for it when I had experiences a few times, don’t recall ever getting a reply, which seems part of the course.

What makes Roon run slowly?

Qobuz
Tidal
Local files
length of time that Roon has been running since last restart
Lack of prefetching
Lack of metadata
Too much metadata
Unidentified albums
Identified albums
Searches

This thread started nicely with honest attempts by several people to collect and pin down possible causes but now it’s just the usual bashing again that helps nobody. I have all the things you listed and it’s not slow (and I’m not the only one), so clearly these are not sufficient conditions.

I noticed a significant Roon slow down a couple months ago. I personally believe something happened on the Roon end that caused it. I’m out of town for two more weeks, but I certainly hope something has happened on the Roon end to get us back to where we were before.

That said, I’m not getting in the middle of an argument about it.

Okay so as i type this I’m trying to play a new release from Qobuz and it’s taking several minutes to start playing…

Still waiting…

In the meantime Roon has introduced Valance, something no one asked for and no one uses

Still waiting…

An Roon introduced ARC, a non working version of PlexAmp

Still waiting…

Yeah Roon does get a lot of things right but speed isnot one of them.

Oh, and I’m still waiting for the album to start playing, must be my 1 gig fiber optic Internet connection that’s slow (not!!).

Well wouldn’t you know it, the music is finally playing, however it’s no longer a new release

I also have a large local library - 15550 albums, 342649 tracks. I don’t stream Qobuz or Tidal. Only my local library with my files on my NAS using Sonic Transporter i9. Everything ethernet hardwired. It’s a known issue that Roon gets slower as you use it. Eventually, Roon Server just restarts on it’s own. And I have 1gb Fiber too. Everything else here works fine including JRiver which houses all my music too. And I love ARC when it works. Lately if I load a bunch of files to my library and then immediately open ARC it will also crash Roon Server. I’ll admit it’s a pain but I’ve just grown used to it. Every couple days my server reboots on it’s on. At least I know it fixes everything for about 48 hours. Roon server and ARC run great and then within a couple days, or even more frequently when I’m adding music I get random restarts. Thankfully, it only takes a couple minutes. I just wish there was some kind of explanation?

Ok. So i have 54k albums and i also have stuggled lately. I know that it us not my swtup from the years of using ROON flawlessly. Im intrigued by what you said about duplicates. Id like to undertand exactl g what you did

Thank you. After clearing the cache, the 5 seconds it used to take from clicking on an album to viewing its contents has been reduced to 1-2 seconds.
Running Roon Server on Nucleus and about 7,000 albums.

Ben, it certainly seemed to have helped here. However it seems either, or both, Roon /Mircrosoft become conjested after use so I find a reboot of both is needed from time to time.

Back to duplicates - I missed some previously by checking via Artist display because the same album can appear with different artist prominance. Album title is a bit better but multiple releases with different covers make finding duplicates challenging there also. And, although a bit helpful, Roon does not detect all duplicates because only about 50% are recognised. And it also lists false duplicates.

Musical life with Roon can be challenging but is way way better than handling physical data, besides which I could not physically accomodate all the albums in this library to say nothing of frustration finding an item! So we might curse and complain about how Roon does not always do what we want but it appears the best available. Regardless, after spending (quite literally) thousands of hours of my retirement in massaging the collection, I’m really tied to it now!!

I am tied to it as well. It is challenging but far better than anything else. I think part of the slowdown for me is that i have many albums of various artists that i put together that roon doesnt recognise and many foreign albums. I also find that rebooting my remote helps. A tip i found out last year was that if you keep your backups on a drive that is scanned that can cause corruptions and slowdowns. I will address what dups i can this weekend and see. Thanks for the postv

I think I found something that might help a lot of people:

Check the number of connection in your Roon profile in the the web. In my case I found approx 10 out of the last months. After cancelling all of them besides the actual active suddenly my Roon is getting back to the speed used to.

I guess Roon should have a closer look to that.

See my former issue and details:

Can you explain better what you mean by “number of connections?” And where does one find these?

The only thing that I can that might be what @Aquarius_M_Taurus might mean is “Login Sessions” at the bottom of the profile page at Your Account

However, I can’t see that this would make much difference to Roon Search speed, and has absolutely no impact on operations that are performed 100% locally on the Roon Server.

I think it is simply a record of the account logins used, amongst other things, to track authorised devices (those for which explicit login is not requried and on which the two factor, if enabled, has been completed).

Settings > General and click the “View account info” button to open your accont page in a web browser, then scroll down that page.

All of the possible issues you raise here would produce performance impacts that do not depend on the time of day. That is NOT what I see. Even with my current NUC ROCK setup (NUC10i7, 500mbps down / 30mbps up internet, consistent over time), I see meaningful slowdowns at times when you’d expect more users on the platform (eg night time).

I think by and large performance issues are due to unperformant / undersized cloud server throughput.

Actually, that is not true.

Many, if not all, of the issues are listed because, for some people, they affect the performance of Search which is dependent on the ability of the Roon Cloud servers.

Can you clarify? You seem to be saying exactly the same as me.

Search depends on cloud services which is exactly what I am pointing to: lack of performance of cloud services. And to add to this, when I do the SAME search on either TIDAL or Qobuz (I subscribe to both) the result comes back immediately. AND when I do the same search on Audirvana, same thing: the results come back immediately.
