Please remind me… what did I recommend in Beethoven and Tchaikovsky? Perhaps I can adjust to your taste, nothing as personal as classical music performances!
If I remember correctly, this one
You did not recommend any Tchaikovsky, but I already owned this one for years:
This was my only classical album until six months ago.
Just added this version of Winterreise from TIDAL, and from track 2 onwards, there is the most appalling distortion. I’ll raise it in the support forum.
Yes I have that too
Ah! You didn’t like the music (Beethoven’s symphonies), or the interpretation? Personally, I would definitely recommend Debussy’s and Ravel’s piano music and chamber music over Beethoven or Mozart, followed by Schubert’s and Haydn’s, but again, that’s very personal.
Hm, I can’t remember that @Geoff_Coupe, but it’s been a while that’s been recommended and I listened to it. I will check Spotify, but unfortunately, @Dick_Vliek has just pulled me into a Schubert evening
I will probably get shot but Beethoven is a little dull (on average). That can be the interpretation, I dont know.
Shoot now I have to find myself some Debussy and Ravel
I won’t be the one shooting you To modern ears, Beethoven can sound a bit dull indeed. Just like Mozart. But I can assure they aren’t. Perhaps best to start with something different. But again, so personal… perhaps you’re not a chamber music guy.
I could suggest some recordings if you like. But it might turn out to be the case, you prefer the big symphonic gestures of Wagner more. Or the romanticism of Mahler’s symphonies (which I much prefer to Beethoven’s), or the structured complexity of Bruckner’s. Try some things and post your findings, there are many lovers of classical music here, able to advise you on the basis of your findings!
One of my favourite interpretations. He was a student of Ravel. Especially like the Miroirs. In decent sound too. Walter Gieseking is great, especially in Debussy, but not great sounding (1950s) to start with.
That’s a good place to start with!
Absolutely adore Ravel’s Piano Trio. This is a great recent interpretation, good sound too (I usually prefer older recordings for their interpretations despite lesser SQ). But enjoy your Mahler first!
However, when I recommend Ravel, I can’t leave out Debussy…
This is a solo album from the front man of the Gorillaz. I just discovered it is in MQA available… This is such a great Album!!!
Try it and you will get stuck to it…
I think we can already conclude you’re probably more an orchestral classical music guy than a chamber music guy
(Nothing wrong with that, by the way )
