What We Are Listening To [2022-12]

KH

I’ve really enjoyed listening to this album today. It’s all covers, each delivered in a similar low-key arrangement.
He’s a new to me artist, although his late Dad Nicky was in one of my favourite schlock movies of the early seventies. :sunglasses:

This should potentially also reside in the worst album covers topic! Surprisingly this hunk has delivered a very listenable album. :+1:

I have stuff that rattles, that is new.

Of Arcangelo Corelli’s (1653–1713) output only six opera have been published, but these have been immensely influential. His op.5 violin sonatas were published in January 1700, and had large influence on violin technique and violin sonata writing in the first half of the 18th century.

Many good recorded interpretations are available; there’s the 1975 ‘virtuoso’ playing by Grumiaux, Stefano Montenari’s well-regarded version with Ottavio Dantone and his Academia Bizantina, a beautiful recording by the Avison Ensemble, Lina Tur Bonet’s rendition from 2017, accompanied by her ensemble Musica Alchemica, Andrew Manze’s version with Richard Egarr on harpsichord, and many more. Apart from the style and school of violin playing, if more traditional or more HIPster inclined, the different recorded versions showcase different continuo instrument combinations and variations, and it is good to have so much variety to explore.

This album, released in 2012 by a less well-known trio of musicians who go by the moniker of ‘Trio Corelli’, I find a highly welcome addition to the catalogue. The violin playing is rather in the HIP style, especially on disc 2 with the six chamber sonatas, as opposed to the six church sonatas, which are included in disc 1 and where some vibrato is used. The continuo group is made up by an organ and Viggo Mangor’s archlute and theorbo. And this musician signs at the same time responsible for the recording and sound engineering, which I can only applaud as he has done a terrific job.

Temporal by Julia Kent

Listening for the first time now and really enjoying this. Thank you @Traian_Boldea for bringing it to my attention.

I see the tag neo-classical and I’ll play it.
