It’s almost like Roon doesn’t care about the Radio function at all…
EarlyAccess: Roon 2.49 Build 1520 lists ‘improvements to Roon Radio algorithms’ as a change. Care to share what these might be @nathan/@joel ? I hadn’t noticed any improvement to repeated artists/albums.
Just hitting play to start genre radio from the Prog-Rock genre screen doesn’t just give the same 8 songs (which are barely prog) followed by the music stopping, which it has done for months now, anymore. It now cues up hundreds of decent choices just as a genre radio should. So I would say it looks like that has been changed and improved.
Edit: actually that’s inaccurate. Hitting play of course just plays songs from that genre from the library… testing “start radio” separately now.
Edit2: radio picks were similar to before, but it didn’t fail after 8 songs.
I tried Pink Floyd Radio and it played two tracks from Eric Clapton’s Unplugged album within the first twenty tracks. It also repeated Toto, Eagles and Paul McCartney artists within the first ten tracks. Business as usual as far as I can tell.
Fundamentally broke here, played some Jeffrey Silverstein and all rood radio can do is spit out song after song by David Michael Moore, one after the other after the other.
Doesn’t stop surprising me - radio started off Yes - Close to the Edge, First song Eric Clapton - Give me strength, then Eagles - the long run followed by Fleetwood Mac and Toto. At which point I couldn’t be bothered anymore. Intrigued to understand what Valence makes of the highly esoteric genre called “prog rock”.
I tried with Yes and the track CTTE as well , this is what i got.
Repeats the same well known artists with very familiar tracks which could be ok or maybe not if Discovery is on ones mind.
Note that two of the Yes tracks was banned in my local library/profile. This should not happen, though i have seen this a few times recently .
I played this on a profile i have created purely for Prog and Hard Rock to see if this improves Radio/Discovery.
I use this profile to find newer Prog/Neo-Prog and for this purpose Roon has done a good job.
Something has change with Roon Radio. I haven’t listened using Roon Radio for months until recently. No matter what genre I previously selected, a Micheal Jackson Thriller song would be tossed in the mix. I have recently used Roon Radio for several hours and I have not had any Micheal Jackson in my queue. After this post, I’ll be hit with Micheal Jackson.
I’ve heard more Toto in the last month than I’ve heard in the last 40 years. ![]()
My wife likes to listen to choral music in the evenings most nights. Nice, peaceful angelic voices sort of thing. Unfortunately, with Roon Radio in control it made a bit of a noisy intrusion into the flow of choral music by selecting an artist that sort of sounded classical on paper but wasn’t. Vivaldi but not as we know it. Roon Radio selected a track by the metal guitarist Angel Vivaldi! This came straight after a track by composer Camille Saint-Saens.
it’s the reverse Papa Johns: bad data, bad playlists.
A couple of days ago I started radio from the AC/DC artist page. After a couple of relevant tracks I got Billy Joel.
I tried Qobuz AC/DC radio and got a list of about 30 songs that were perfect matches.
Same thing with Tidal, except a much longer list.
Unfortunately, Tidal /Qobuz radios are not accessible in roon without jumping through hoops to save them as a playlist and sync them.
It would be nice if we could start radios from Tidal/Qobuz using their radio functions.
It would also be nice if roon would queue a list instead of one song at a time so you can see what you’re going to get and decide if you want to try something else.
I never use Roon radio anymore except in the car with Arc as I don’t want to be fiddling with buttons whilst driving if my playlist ends.
Sometimes I think it’s like the ugly duckling or forgotten child. It really is poor compared to the alternatives out there.
La Bamba was the last song on my playlist (a summer themed one) and I ended up with…
Whatever about the musical choice playing 4 tracks in a row from the same album!
If Valence was a human they’d be on their last warning!

So funny ![]()
It seems to be stuck in tribunal and won’t leave. Security!!
This post of mine may fit here as well
It’s unbelievable that these problems with Roon Radio have existed for at least 5 years, with dozens if not hundreds of user complaints, copious amounts of data showing exactly what the issues are, and somehow… somehow Roon has not fixed it?
They should get a wriggle on… Spotify may be odious, but if their algorithms are competitive, and the offer is (now) at least Redbook sound quality, then it’s a hard sell to pay for Valence as well as Tidal/qobuz.
Today is the first time I tried Roon Radio in many months and I am pleasantly surprised. I started my listening session with Ten Years After, ‘I’d love to change the world’. I’m ten hours into listening and I haven’t heard a single Michael Jackson song. In the past, no matter what genre I queued up, I would get a Michael Jackson song from Thriller within the first ten songs. Roon Radio has done me right all day. I hope today wasn’t a fluke.
The issue I have found in the past when starting with that era of music as the seed track is that Roon will just play exactly the same artists and songs the next time you try it with Roon Radio. It is so repetitive in many predictable ways until it loses the plot completely and plays something very different indeed or gets stuck repeating tracks from an album.
