Description of Issue

Many albums on my hard drive are multichannel.
Windows sound settings are set multichannel when sent to the Denon AVR.

When the Windows sound settings are set to multichannel (not using the Roon app) it plays fine, but when using the Roon app, it only plays if Windows is configured to stereo speakers.

Any ideas how I can get multichannel audio when played from the Roon app? This is a critical requirement.

I am on a Roon trial - quite dissappointed no response, no assistance, on the above from Roon ā€œSupportā€ & community.

I’ll try again - my Windows 11 software speakers settings are configured to multichannel as I use the PC to listen to multichannel tracks from my hard drive as well as watch movies with surround sound. This is being sent from my hard drive via an HDMI to my Denon X7200WA (not on the Roon Ready list).
With this setting, in order to hear audio from Roon, I need to re-set my Windows speakers to Stereo - which is totally inconvenient.
Is there are solution to this - that Roon can play audio from the Windows drivers when set to multichannel?

I haven’t used it or I’d offer a hand. I’d just frustrate you.
Didn’t want you left feeling unheard.

It’s been a long time since I used a Roon Core on Windows with an HDMI connection to my Denon AVR, but I did have it working. If I recall correctly, the device settings in Settings > Audio needed to be configured just so for the connection to be successful.

Can you post a few screenshots (default and advanced settings) of the HDMI connection you are using to demonstrate what you have?

Thanks for your response. - this helped me. I had the speakers set to multichannel but I found that I had to set it to the exact configuration as the Windows sound app (even though I had fewer speakers).
I can now play files to the AVR. The only issue now, is I cant play any of the significant number of DTS files that I have on my hard drive via Roon - so I have to exit Roon to play these files, which is frustrating. If you have a solution for playing DTS files through Roon that would be much appreciated.

Thanks again.

I’m afraid that DTS is not one of the formats supported by Roon.

Ok thanks for clarifying. Appreciate your responses.

On this basis I have cancelled my Roon trial, it’s not for me as a substantial number of albums on my hard drive are multichannel DTS. Audirvana actually has an effective workaround so will go with them.

What are the album sources? And what is the workaround?

This was through repeated trial & error in the Audirvana settings. With Audirvana I found that if you set the Denon AVR to ā€œStereoā€ in the Audirvana settings, this allowed the Audirvana to access the Denon AVR and play back DTS tracks that are stored on my PC hard drive in multichannel through the Denon. I dont quite know how it works technically, but it works. Does not work on Roon.

Thanks for coming back to me. Yes, I had done extensive searching on the Roon community boards and could not find an effective solution to playing my dts tracks collection with my particular set up. If it is possible using Roon, they certainly don’t make it easy.
Whereas it works fine on Audirvāna. Anyway, I have now cancelled Roon.
