Excuse the question… I currently have a Marantz HD dac1 dac, what do you think would be the appropriate pcm and dsd filters for it?
…I use it through a macbookPro M1.
Thank you.
Oh, gawd…not the dreaded “blind testing” police.
You can use ASDM7ECv2 at DSD128 with it. With filter of your choice. Please refer to the manual table for some rough suggestions on what could be suitable for the music genres you are listening.
@jussi_laako Please how do I reduce the CPU TEMPERATURE from reaching +100.0°C on a new NUC i7-10510u.
My DSD 256 HQplayer config.
1 x poly-sinc-gauss-long
N x poly-sinc-gauss-hires-lp
Also If I purchase a HQplayer license and can I transfer it to another PC because I’m thinking of buying a new server?
It just needs enough cooling. But NUC can be challenging to cool, because it is so tightly crammed into small space. And it has limited processing power due to use of U-series (ultra-mobile) CPUs.
Please what about Hqplayer transfer of licence to another pc. Can it be possible?
Yes, for HQPlayer Desktop it is easier since it is not hardware locked. While for HQPlayer Embedded you’ll need to request updated key.
Hi Jussi, I saw some recommendations upon the modulator 5th or 7th order to use depending on the DAC we use.
I’ve not found any recommendation from you for owners of a PSAudio DirectStream Senior.
Would you have one advice?
Thank you.
Pat
Anecdotical impressions, subjectivism and bios here is just fine. There’s no good, better or especially best, we all konw… But what I really often miss here is a notion of a music that people are listening to with this or that HQP settings, because that actually matters. And it is exciting to follow the path of a fellow listener just for the fun of it.
Agree, and I get inspired by this thread too, so more music examples would be great! It’s just that sometimes I wonder about all the superlative praise of minuscule filter variations. Would we really be able to discern the difference (not ranking, just difference) between DSD256 ASDM7EC and ECv2 if blind tested? I don’t think so and I’m going to figure out a way to test. Am I the only one who wants to know objective, actual effects of our tinkering efforts? I’m not taking a p*ss on somebody’s parade, I really want to know!
No one can answer what you will or will not hear. I always suggest everyone listen for themselves. As for myself, yes, I could.
However, I think the greater difference was between the ASDM7 and ASDM7EC, though. The difference there was, to my ears, extraordinary. ( poly-sinc-ext2 ) since that also makes a difference.
You did this blind? How did you rig the test? It’s quite cumbersome to change filter. Even if you have someone assist you, it takes some time to change. I’m using Desktop. Maybe its easier with Embedded?
What one could do, I think, is to prepare different upsampled files offline with HQPlayer Pro. Then play those with foobaar ABX or similar SW.
Sorry. Didn’t specify. No not blinded. Yes, it is cumbersome to change filters.
Someone should measure the combination. But I’m pretty confident that 7th order modulators are fine for it.
It takes couple of seconds. Is that really cumbersome?
With audio, all blind testing is going to tell you is if you can hear a difference. It takes time to determine if that difference sounds better, worse, or about the same. I skip the blind testing and just listen to music with different filters for days a time. This allows me to find the filters I enjoy listening to music with the most.
Blind testing is a waste of time unless you are doing something academic…and then it is still a waste of time.
In an ABX test, yes. On the other hand, you might argue that if you need quick AB to even hear a difference, it’s so small it doesn’t matter.
The difference, yes. That is all I want to hear to begin with. If there is a real difference, I can continue deciding what sounds best. Shifting between filters with no audible difference is a waste of time in my opinion.
So you can’t hear a difference when you change filters?
Well, there have been times when I could not readily tell a difference between filters in a direct comparison…but, listening to music with them over time, I can say that I like one filter more than the other. Blind testing is just the panacea you believe it to be…
