Why are you hiding Nucleus? Its not anymore

Roon is clearly software, the Nucleus is a Roon appliance, a packaging of software and hardware.

I noticed this to. Which considering the huge mark up on the units is for dealer support this kind of sucks. I always thought this would happen though. Dealers are not IT experts on the whole and most issues around the Nucleus (XMOS ignored) are down to networking issues or not understanding how to share media to it.

@Geoff_Coupe

I am not a Sonos expert, but, I do know that it’s an eco-system. There’s no need to wander the audio-scape looking for components hoping that they will integrate. Also, I believe in the earlier releases, they used their own networking, bypassing a customers wifi. From what I understand they recently switched to wifi and subsequently, dealers are now dealing with home wifi issues. As I said, I am not 100% certain about this.

I think if Roon is really going to get a reasonable amount of market share, an eco-system approach is the best way to go forward. Maybe just formal relationships with Sonore, SoTM, and even Allo could be the path forward. Of course, this still won’t solve networking issues, but, it will resolve at least half of the current challenges.

Someone needs to update the KB and give specific step by step instructions in how to set up the Nucleus. The dealers are not going to be held responsible for that.

In the example I gave above, I think the whole problem is that the OP doesn’t understand how to access a shared file in roonOS. I just gave some more detailed instructions, so we’ll see if that helps.

@danny, Since the dealers sell Nucleus as a turn key device (which it surely isn’t) the problem is only going to get worse, IMHO, unless some proactive KB steps are taken.

The KB’s are not very well signposted either if you ask me.

Definitely need a technical writer, there are plenty out there, to compose a Wiki style manual, a Tips & Techniques, so to speak.

First: https://kb.roonlabs.com/Nucleus_Manual – There are 7 steps to set up your Nucleus listed on this page ranging from “Before you get started” to “configuring Roon for Nucleus”.

Second: After updating, this is the first “real” step (Step 4) https://kb.roonlabs.com/Nucleus_Media_Storage_And_Audio_Devices

This page states under storage devices:

  1. Network shares (such as a NAS)
For now, just make sure the NAS is turned on and plugged into your network. If you have a username/password for your share, take note of it now. We highly recommend connecting networked storage via ethernet always.

Lastly, the last step of the 7 is https://kb.roonlabs.com/Configuring_Roon_With_Nucleus

It has a screenshot of how to configure where your music is, and has this blurb:

Click Add Network Folder if you keep your music on a NAS device. If you have any trouble with the on screen instructions after clicking Add Network Folder, take a look at this article.

That article is https://kb.roonlabs.com/Adding_Folders_Using_Path, and has very detailed screenshots and instructions for setting up the SMB share, from both a Window and Mac user’s perspective.

Did he not have the manual link?

Actually, while he may not have had it before, @noris gave it to him 2 days ago.

@SteveSilberman is going to have a chat with his dealer.

I don’t know if that was truly his problem as he hasn’t replied ,yet.

Taking a quick look at the links you supplied, they talk about adding from a NAS, how to set up a shared file in Windows or macOS.

It isn’t until one gets to this- https://kb.roonlabs.com/Adding_Folders_Using_Path that more detail is supplied for the OP’s specific problem.

I think you give computer ignorant people too much credit as to how to figure out some problems. On the other hand, short of an extensive Wiki with all the Wiki features (links etc.) I don’t know what more can be done.

OK, some people need more hand holding than others.

The dealers seem to be unwilling to do this.

For a dealer to give a customer a link to this forum so that customer can figure out what’s wrong with a device that the dealer sold him, is a really a sh*tty thing to do.

that’s an easy one … if they are unwilling, they get fired.

Agreed. That’s why @SteveSilberman is talking to this dealer. This is unacceptable.

@SteveSilberman talked to the dealer, and it looks like there is another side to this story. The dealer made several attempts to help the customer, which were not accepted. The dealer now seems to have contacted the customer with a “WTF?” moment, and the customer now is all LOL’s and stuff:

WTF indeed.

Anyway, thanks for your help @xxx

Yeah, I’ve been trying to help the guy in another post.

There definitely is a dealer’s side that should be listened to. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

setting up the nucleus (plus) is a piece of cake (ok - I have some IT experience). It is really the simplicity and the focus on only one thing - giving the best roon experience.
The downside - it is not a cheap box, to be frank: Serious audio gear is never a cheap thing.

I like what I bought, but I hope on the other side that the roon os will get more features over the time to make usage of this tiny, but powerful box.

Regards
Tom

@danny good stuff. I enjoyed reading the white paper, its great to read and finally have a good understanding of its development and choices, especially RoonOS.

Very nice. The only minor remaining issue is that one trim level is categorized under camera on Amazon.com. I feel like I read somewhere you were aware of that. Maybe? Anyway, here it is.

we are aware… we are trying to get amazon give us the rights to edit these listings.
