Why Aren’t You Listening to Canadian Music Right Now?

One of my favourites. One of the best gigs I went to was one of their in London.

Vancouver based but not sure they are all Canadian.

And love Destroyer to.

Funny you say that as I last saw The New Pornographers at the 100 Club (I think) in London when I lived there. And you are correct, that Neko Case isn’t Canadian but majority rules in my book.

Mentioning Neko Case, reminds of these guys…

Who’s missing from this list?:

(I’m from the States. I knew the top 3 and only a few others were Canadian.)

By the way, about half my HiFi gear is from Canadian companies. So from that perspective, I listen to “Canadian Music” nearly every day!

It’s not the worst list, but it reinforces the stereotype that Canadian music is mostly singer-songwriters, hard rock and Drake. But there really is a lot more diversity than that:

Daniel Romano if you like classic country. Sleep Beneath the Willow is a favourite. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTqCAtNV18M

If the country vibe doesn’t appeal check out the more recent Modern Pressure, or the live Daniel Romano & The Outfit stuff. Romano plays most of the instruments on his studio recordings but he can put together a great band. Case in point: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCBBjR_vHtU

While people are arguing about Roon certification, how about some more vintage Canadiana? Unfortunately, Love Crimes isn’t on Tidal, so I have to go with this instead. I can’t believe this was released in 2007!

Now where did I put my roller skates…

As usual, Roon’s “meticulously curated metadata” is really weak when it comes to small label / lesser-known / non-US jazz, but these are great dates led by Canadian guitarist Sonny Greenwich, the late Canadian trumpeter Kenny Wheeler, and Canadian multi-instrumentalist Don Thompson. Hard to find, but gems, all.

Brandi Disterheft, who, completely coincidentally, was the last artist to whom I listened before grabbing these screen shots, also is a Canadian. She is a fine bassist.

Based on your recommendation, I’m giving Live at the Montreal Bistro by Kenny Wheeler & Sonny Greenwich a spin right now (it was available on Tidal) and it reminded me of another great Canadian jazz guitarist that I will post later.

Ed Bickert? Nelson Symonds?

Of course. How could I have failed to remember Lenny Breau? Good call.

I think the other three are closer stylistically to one another than any of them is to Breau, and I prefer them, but it is Breau’s individualism that makes him memorable.

Yes, there was no real musical connection with LB; it was only that I recalled that I had not listened to that album in a very long time. I am also somewhat partial to most things Winnipeg-related (which also explains the Harlequin posting earlier)!
