Why is "various artists" showing next to each track artist on a compilation?

See attached screenshot; the album artist is set to “various artists” as it is a compilation. I would expect the track artist to be listed next to each track - instead it lists the track artist and “various artists” next to each track. Am I doing something wrong?

Are these local files that you tagged yourself? Or streaming?

If you open the track editor from the three-dot menu of a track and go to the credits, is Various Artists set as a performer on the track credits?

Local files. I probably tagged them myself a number of years ago - I think I ripped this CD myself.

I went to the three-dot menu for a track and selected “edit”. I don’t see any “credits”. If I go to the “edit track” tab it has a credits section:

If I click on “edit credits” I see this:

Thanks

That’s what I meant - the Ensemble credit probably counts as a performer (reasonably). If you uncheck that and save it, does the performer credit disappear from the track display for this track?

Yes, it then disappears. So I have to do this separately for every track? Why is it there in the first place? I loaded the album into MP3Tag but it doesn’t even have the “ensemble” field. I don’t see “ensemble” in the Roon album editor or when I go to edit the album’s credits.

No. Select one track, then click the Select menu top left and then Select All. You have now all tracks selected. (There are more detailed and powerful multi select options, but for now this is all you need).

Now, do NOT select the three-dot menu to the right of one of the selected tracks, as this will only edit the one track the menu belongs to. Instead, select the (…) menu at the top of the album view, then Edit > Edit Tracks. Go to the Remove Credits option and search for Ensemble. Uncheck it, save. You have now removed this from all selected tracks.

I don’t know, you didn’t share the name of the album or any other information except very limited screenshots

Album credits and track credits in Roon are different and separate, and this one seems to be in the track credits

Thanks very much for this help, I’ll bear this in mind if I come across the problem again!

I am back home and it is easier now

Regarding the more powerful multi-select options, see this post:

Regarding the album, I suppose it is this one, right?

I have it only on streaming, but I don’t have these Various Artists performers on the tracks:

So I guess they might be coming from your file tags after all, somehow. Or Roon applies different metadata to your local copy, but if I go to Album > Edit > Identify, there is only one version, so this is probably unlikely.

A man of taste!! I see that your metadata seems to be superior to mine?

Not so much taste, but the track titles are quite specific so it easy to search  The metadata is what Roon gives me automatically, I didn’t do anything. But I have Settings > General > Browsing Preferences > Show Composer Credits > Always enabled, which affects the composer display on the tracks and looks like the only difference as far as I can see. Well, apart from me not having the Various Artist performers
