I recently "upgraded" one of my wireless endpoint devices -- a Ropieee with a Hifiberry Digi+ hat -- to a WiiM Ultra, also on wifi. I generally group this endpoint with other endpoints around the house which are a mix of wireless and wired, and since swapping out the Ropieee w/ the WiiM, the WiiM is unable to stay in sync with other devices in the group. Like, it's not even trying to stay in sync. W/in one or two songs the noticeable latency starts and then by 5+ songs it's up to a good .25 second delay. I've tried every setting I can think of on the WiiM to optimize the wifi settings -- set the mix pits to 16, forced downsampling anything to 44.1 via Muse sample rate conversion, etc, and no luck. I know some people will say it's a wifi issue, and at some point I will run cabling to the WiiM, but right now it's only wifi, and I never had any issue with the Ropieee on the same wireless network in the same location in the house.
Describe your network setup
Asus wifi mesh; Roon server is wired with a mix of wired and wireless endpoints.
Ugh, the new-ish support form is tough. A few more details to add:
As the screencap shows, the Roon logs looks good for keeping two devices in sync. In this example, the Music-Room-851N device is wired.
I’ve tried grouping in multiple configurations by starting with one device and grouping another (or more) into the group. No matter which endpoint is first, the WiiM will always lose sync very quickly (and no other device in the same group does).
At this point I’ll probably revert back to the Ropieee device, which is a shame b/c I really love the WiiM Ultra devices; I have another one in another room that is wired in, but I’ve never tested it grouped to see if it loses sync like the wireless one does.
If there’s anything else I can change or test on either Roon or the WiiM Ultra I’d love to try it to see if it can resolve the out of sync issues.
From your description, it seems the WiiM Ultra, when operating over Wi-Fi, is unable to maintain sync with other grouped zones, even though the Ropieee in the same location did not have this issue.
Since grouping works fine with Ropieee in the same Wi-Fi spot, it’s likely not a network issue. We recommend either going back to the Ropieee setup or using a wired connection for the WiiM Ultra if possible.
