WIIM Pro Volume Control

Does anyone know whether there is a way to use Roon to control volume on a WIIM Pro using the internal dac? Doesn’t seem like it, but maybe I’m missing something. It’s only giving fixed and device (no DSP). I set it on device, but changing the volume in Roon doesn’t do anything. I know there is a volume control in the WIIM App…but it doesn’t appear that Roon is actually changing it. Maybe I’m missing a setting in the WIIM Pro interface? Thanks for your help.

Enabling volume control on the WiiM Pro may disable MQA support though.

Mine is set to Device volume, is using the internal DAC and Roon controls the volume.
Maybe reboot everything and see if it kicks it into working.

Is anyone else having an issue with very low volume from the Wiim Pro?

I have both the Wiim and Roon set to fixed volume. I’ve tried using both the coax and optical outputs. My DAC/Amp needs to be almost at full volume to drive my headphones. Previously, using USB from a Mac, the volume knob was set to 60, now it is is set to 95 for listening (and I don’t listen at high volumes at all).

Your not comparing like for like there as I understand it. USB Vs digital?

Thanks for the reply.

USB is digital. It contains the exact same data as SPDIF. The difference is the data transfer and the addition of a CRC.

It is possible that some difference in how my DAC handles USB is the root cause. However, it seems more likely to me that it is an issue with the Wiim. I’ll try the Wiim with a different DAC. If it has the same issue, I’ll have to return it.

Yes I know usb is digital but the outputs and input electronics are usually completely different so will quite often give different signal volumes.

I opened a ticket with Wiim.

Different, but not really completely different. My DAC is a Topping and they use a chip from XMOS to convert from USB to PCM. From there, the signal path is identical. It is certainly possible that the issue I’m experiencing is due to USB, but there are a lot of measurements of the Topping DAC online and no one mentions any difference in gain for different digital inputs. I think it is more likely an issue with the Wiim than with the DAC, although either is possible.

I did find a partial solution that I may be able to live with:

  • Disabled Headroom Management in Roon (since I’m not using EQ with these headphones, I don’t really need it)
  • Changed my DAC to its 5V XLR output mode, instead of its 4V XLR setting.

Also, I tried using Tidal Connect for playback and had the exact same volume, so I can say for certain that the issue is not due to Roon.

Thanks @AMT. I just double checked that I’m on the latest version. I had the same thought about the settings, tested it, and had the same result as you.

I’m using the power supply that came with the Wiim Pro. Despite the volume issue, the Wiim Pro sounds great.

I’m filed a ticket with Wiim and if they reply with anything useful, I’ll post here. I’ve decided I can live with the issue though.

Wiim never replied to my ticket. :frowning:

Thanks, but no need. They acknowledged my ticket, so I know they have it. I’m guessing they don’t know the answer. I’m going to just live with the problem. They may come out with a version with USB output later this year.

Did you ever fix this? Kind of having the same thing with the analog inputs on the Wiim.

No. However, I think an issue with the analog inputs would be different. Have you tried asking on the Wiim forum?

Not yet, but after i tinker around with it a little bit more i’ll do that, cheers.

I think it has something to do with the low phono output on my Marantz NR1200 in Zone 2 so a little different than your problem i think, but same ballpark

Question: has this been resolved?

In other words, are you able to use Roon to control the volume on a Wiim Pro?

I am asking, as I am exploring the option to add a Wiim pro to my setup

I had the exact same issue and was able to resolve it. I was running Roon through my MacBook to my dac/headphone amp via usb, then hooked up the Wiim Pro via coax, configured Roon volume control to “Fixed volume” and then the dac/headphone amp output was much quieter (just like OP)
I then went into the Wiim app > Audio Settings > and toggled Fixed volume output on and now the dac/headphone amp output is comparable to what it was using usb from my MacBook
