Update today !!! Now that the WiiM Ultra is certified for the Roon, I want to test and compare it to the Cambridge CXN V2.
I’m still going to decide which one will stay in this room and one of them will go to another place in the house.
Update today !!! Now that the WiiM Ultra is certified for the Roon, I want to test and compare it to the Cambridge CXN V2.
I’m still going to decide which one will stay in this room and one of them will go to another place in the house.
And early thoughts are
I was looking at the Ultra as a possible Bluetooth transmitting endpoint for headphone listening, but according to specs it doesn’t support Aptx codecs. It does however have a USB output so I’d be interested to know if anyone has managed to get a BT dongle to work with the USB output?
Hi, im thinking of purchasing the Ultra and would like to know if the Roon Ready certification will be made available by Wiim through a firmware update donloaded to the Ultra? Thanks, James
@James_Osella I have a WiiM Pro Plus, and it has received multiple software updates over the air via the app. One of them was for Roon Ready certification, which for my device happened a few months after I bought it. If you get an Ultra device that doesn’t already have the Roon Ready functionality out of the box, I’m sure it will be the sent to the device the same way.
Thanks, Brian. Much appreciated.
Any idea if the Wiim Ultra processes hires files and doesn’t downsample?
I have had the Cambridge mnx10 for over a year now and now comparing with the Ultra. I’m wondering if the Cambridge processes hires fully and doesn’t downsample as well? Anyone know?
This use case is using RAAT for both.
Thanks.
If using the inbuilt DAC the Ultra will downsample for DSD or if it’s over 192/24 as that’s the max if supports for its audio pipeline. However as Wiims also don’t show their DSP in Roons signal path who really knows. I have a wiim pro plus and when their eq is active Roon hasn’t a clue about what’s going on. The Cambridge doesn’t downsample. roon will though if it’s over its specs which is 192/24 for PCM.
I’m using 2 ultras on 2 separate systems. One connected to a marantz av10 and the other to a Yamaha rx-a3080. Both connected optical so not using the built-in dac on the ultra but on the pre/pros. So I’m assuming that both are processing full sample rates? I also have the Cambridge connected to the AV10 via coax as test. Again assuming it is also processing full sample rates?
Up to its specs it should be yes so upto 192/24 anything higher Roon will downsample external dac or internal dac.’
Ok, thank you.
I have a Pro Plus that I use with LMS only and use the inbuilt PEQ, have to say I hear no difference when I used Roon RAAT and Roon’s PEQ with the exact same settings for 2 headphones I use EQ for.
Anyway, the reason for replying is to query the Roon Ready status, I thought in order to be certified the signal path had to be transparent?
I think that depends on what they want to show. For the Pro Plus and Amp though PEQ was added after it’s got RR status they don’t have to go through it again after firmware updates. Not sure about the Ultra if it’s the same or not for not showing DSP , if not then yes makes a mockery of the supposed transparency as it was part of the device before it was RR.
